After a recent article at Gamepro in which they compared current console titles against one another and pronounced the PS3 as the ideal of the bunch, Microsoft Marketing Director Albert Penello had a few choice words to say. Basically, he felt they were dead wrong, which I’m not sure I entirely disagree with. Here’s a quote:

“We have to disagree with your conclusion that the trend of Xbox 360 versions of games being ideal is changing, especially when you look at the entire catalog of multiplatform titles available,” he wrote in a rebuttal.

“The cold, hard truth is that Xbox 360 has the ideal games - and industry reviewers and consumers concur.”

Having been recently sucked into the most resonant RPG I’ve played in ages on the 360, I can’t help but lean towards supporting Mr. Penello here, but numbers still show the Wii in the lead, with 360 second and PS3 third. I think the average gamer would likely name the 360 their favorite, while the casual gamer likely favors the Wii due to ease of play and simple titles. Of course, those very qualities are what make hardcore gamers squirm with hatred for the console, so it seems those features should be a double-edged sword.

Of course, I’d be more likely to cheer on my PS3 if I looked at its game library and saw the diversity that I crave when it comes to gaming. Where are my RPG titles, my indie gems, my quirky Katamaris? I still have great faith in the possibilities for the console, but for now my 360 come sout on top, considering that’s the console that gets turned on every day.

We just got word that the official website for EA’s upcoming space-horror shooter Dead Space is now alive and kicking over at deadspace.ea.com. And once there, you’ll not only be treated to a plethora of in-game Dead Space screenshots and a previously released trailer, but you’ll also encounter other gory goodies. Digging deeper, you’ll find a rather intriguing comic book style video that sets up the game’s story as well as a downloadable fan kit, a developer blog and some old school forums as well. It’s what we in the business would call a Dead Space fanboy’s “dream”. Make the jump, browse a bit and see what you can find over in the on the internet world of Dead Space. And yes, we’ll admit it, our interest has been sparked.

Described as an action-adventure in first-person, Mirror’s Edge is the latest game from the developers of the acclaimed Battlefield series that has seen much success on the PC. The devs seem to be moving in a new direction with this latest project, as the focus of the game isn’t on the shooting, but rather on the movement, a la Assassin’s Creed with . The folks over at 1up got a preview with the game, and it appears well on the way to something different (and hopefully) special. The game’s plot is a fairly typical futuristic affair and is in place mainly to have a good reason for the gameplay. The gameplay itself does sound good though, as it’s meshes freerunning/parkour with melee style attacks and limited shooting. For now the control scheme is easy, but contextual, the sticks are typical FPS fair, but two of the face buttons control “up” and “down” motions to climb/duck or jump/slide. There is talk of a limited amount of slow-time powers, as well as wall-running, but they were in their early phases. All in all, this looks like a title to watch, and it’s well worth reading the 1up impressions and checking out the gallery.

Update: It looks like the original price-point of 200 MS points this morning was in fact an error as the price of the Undertow expansion has been raised to 400 MS points.

Earlier in the week we reported that the expansion to Undertow, Microsoft’s apology gift to gamers for the LIVE service downtime, would be hitting the Marketplace at 400 MS space bucks today.

Well, one for two ain’t bad. The Undertow expansion, Path of the Elect, has hit the Xbox Live Marketplace but at the low price of 200 MS points (aka $2.50). According to the listing on Xbox.com the expansion pack price was slated at 400 MS points, so it is unclear if the content was priced down prior to release or if the Xbox Live Marketplace listing is an error.

Regardless, 200 MS points for the expansion is a steal and fans of Undertow should take notice immediately — especially if this was a mistake!

We’ve known for a while that Mario Kart Wii would support twelve-player online races, but given Nintendo’s less-than-stellar on the internet record, we were a little worried about how smooth the on the web experience would be. Well, we’re a little less worried now that the Nintendo UK web site has revealed some details of how online racing on the Wii will work. Among the details discussed:

  • Spectator mode - When you join a room in progress, you can watch the race unfold while waiting for a new one to begin.
  • Global friend view - Lets you view your friends’ locations and on the web status.
  • Room structure - Host chooses race type, but player votes determine course selection.

The site also revealed a dedicated Mario Kart Wii channel, which can be run independently of the disc-version of the game. The channel lets players view global rankings, share and download ghost data, and download daily missions (similar to those found in Mario Kart DS). Can we recommend a mission dedicated to arranging dropped banana peels into jaunty patterns? That would be awesome.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, but Valve’s Doug Lombardi figures you already paid your meal ticket when you bought Team Fortress 2 on the PS3 or Xbox 360. That’s why he wants all future downloadable content for the console versions to be absolutely free of charge.

Of course, it’s not entirely up to him, but Lombardi hopes to get at least some content — like the upcoming map packs — over to players at no additional charge. According to him, DLC isn’t about earning increased return on games, but rather about “keeping the customer happy.” He sees the work as being an investment in future projects, as it builds consumer trust with the Valve label.

No official date has been set for the first TF2 console DLC. Let’s just hope that Valve’s admirable philosophy wins out in the end.

Since the announcement was made last May, Sony has remained somewhat tight-lipped on the topic of SOCOM Confrontation, the multiplayer-only PS3 entry into the Navy-oriented series. The Might issue of EGM will end all that, however, with a huge feature on the anticipated title, including all new details and screens.

To whet the pallet, Sony has revealed two new screenshots of Confrontation in action, with accompanying information about what players are seeing. The above image displays a ruined shopping mall, on a map that supports 16 player combat, but can expand to fit up to 32. A second screen features Crossroads, a classic SOCOM map that will make an HD reappearance in Confrontation.

In addition to a new over-the-shoulder camera, the classic SOCOM camera option will still be available in Confrontation, for those of us frightened by change. Check out high-res versions of both screens, as well as all the screens released so far, in the gallery below.
