The Financial Times is reporting today that Stan Glasgow, President of Sony Electronics, has stated that there have been discussions with Microsoft to incorporate a Blu-ray drive into the Xbox 360. After the death of HD-DVD Microsoft announced that they would be discontinuing the HD-DVD add-on, leading on to discussions between Microsoft and Sony regarding the possibilities of a Blu-ray add-on, or even a fully integrated drive for future SKUs. The result of this would be an increased price point for the Xbox 360, along with a portion of all hardware revenue going to Sony. Yes, that means Sony would be making money off of every 360 and PS3 sold.

Of course, Microsoft are being coy about this entire thing, stating that they have “made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.” Nothing new there, then. Nothing’s confirmed yet, but we’re intrigued to see where (if anywhere) these speaks will lead.

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH (Europe) has announced today that the company will be teaming up with Madrid-based developer, Mercury Steam, to produce new IP for current-gen systems. We know that the game will be appearing on the PS3 and will be a part of Konami’s 2009-2010 line-up; however, further details as to what the game is about or even its title is still being kept under wraps.

What could this game be? Well let’s look at Mercury Steam’s track record; the company has developed Clive Barker’s Jericho, and a Computer game called Scrapland. Both games are action-adventure titles (even if the former is more horror) … so would it be too much to presume that this title is probably going to be in the same vein?

Scott Steinberg, SCEA VP of product marketing, had a lot of aggressively frank comments to say in an interview with Next Generation. In fact, he comes off quite arrogant, taking pundit jabs at his company’s competitors; however, we actually love this no-holds-barred, non-political, cocky confidence that he displays. It’s refreshing to hear such unabashed statements such as “[Our] focus and dedication is unparalleled with any other first party company. Our first-party games will lead the way.”

It appears that Steinberg’s confidence stems from the PS3’s strong holiday sales, and then the ending of the format wars. He states now that the “Berlin Wall” of HD-DVD is torn down, they have the ability to focus on one less front and work on pushing the company’s 2008 line-up of new IP and “comfort food IP.” Yes, he actually used the terms “Berlin Wall” and “comfort food IP.”

He no doubt stands for SCEA’s high spirit and rightfully so as he brings out some very good points. Take this one for example, “In the years ahead our games will start to distance themselves from other next-gen games … you’ll see games begin to tip the scale at thirty gigs, forty gigs, fifty gigs. You can’t possibly fit that on HD-DVD unless you want to do the old floppy disk swaps of years past.” This is especially a good point since the PS3 will stick in the game for the long run with plans to last ten years. “The pendulum is swinging,” he said referring to developers who once worked on the Xbox 360 and ported to the PS3; he believes there is going to be a big reversal of this dev ritual. In the end, he believes consumers will naturally see the PS3’s advantages and will make the right choice when he states, “Once Grand Theft Auto ships on the platform I think you’ll see those folks on the side line saying ‘I don’t want to get stuck with the wrong one. I’m a PlayStation fan. I waited out the HD-DVD thing and I listened to a lot of misinformation. Now I don’t need to wait.’ There are several reasons to jump in, and PS3’s by far the strongest choice.”

Music lovers, this is a good week for you. Three new songs for Guitar Hero 3 (overpriced, as usual) and six for Rock Band account for the majority of this week’s update. Also, there’s a new game available - Rocketmen, courtesy of Capcom. An arcade shooter featuring on the internet co-op and RPG elements. Might be worth a look. Here’s the full release list:

  • Rocketmen full game ($9.99)
  • Rocketmen demo (free)
  • Guitar Hero III “Modern Metal” track pack ($6.25)
    • Avenged Sevenfold’s “Almost Easy”
    • Thrice’s “The Arsonist”
    • Deftones’ “Hole in the Earth”
  • Rock Band “Grateful Dead” pack ($9.99)
    • “Casey Jones” ($1.99)
    • “Sugar Magnolia” ($1.99)
    • “Truckin’” ($1.99)
    • “Franklin’s Tower” ($1.99)
    • “I Need A Miracle” ($1.99)
    • “China Cat Sunflower” ($1.99)
  • NBA Ballers: Chosen One trailer (free)
  • Lost Planet theme (free)
  • 3 Condemned 2 wallpapers (free)
  • Hancock movie trailer (free)
  • 21 motion picture trailer (free)

All in all, not too bad - but only because of Activision, Harmonix and Capcom. Sony itself has given us very little (if any) of this week’s content. Hopefully we’ll see some more content of various types (more PS1 games please!) in the future. Perhaps after April’s upcoming store redesign.

Another new game announcement today comes in the form of Damnation a “shooter gone vertical,” developed by Blue Omega Entertainment, that promises to “change the landscape of third-person action shooters forever.” The game is due out this winter and will feature “huge, open environments, frenetic combat, daredevil acrobatics and high-octane vehicle-based stunts.” Sounds energetic to us. The story involves an arms dealer hell bent on world domination - a story which promises to be “epic and in-depth”, but which already has us snoring.

The press release is full of superlatives and high-energy words, but not many details are given of what we can anticipate from the game. Each level will have up to three hours of “actual gameplay,” which seems like a lot to us, and players will be able to choose their own paths, utilizing their various acrobatic capabilities to get from point A to B. Of course, Damnation will come with a fully-loaded multiplayer experience that takes full advantage of the vertical nature of the game. We’ll reserve judgment until we see it in action.

Southpeak Games has announced today that it will be publishing Australian developer Fuzzyeyes Studio’s 2009 title Edge of Twilight. Though hitherto relatively unheard of, the game was assumed to be for Xbox 360 and PC only, though the press release sent out today confirms that Edge of Twilight will also be heading to PS3 at the same time. The game’s website is open and what tiny there is seems very intriguing. The idea of a “steampunk fantasy” isn’t something we’ve come across very often, but it sounds very promising.

The game is being developed using the Unreal Engine 3 which, six months ago, would have had us worried. Unreal Tournament 3 has since shown us that UE3 games can rock on the PS3 and past tragedies such as Stranglehold and Blacksite can be forgotten. We have to state, we’re getting some definite Legacy of Kain vibes off of this one (check out the main character, Raziel Lex). We’re sticking Edge of Twilight on our radar and look forward to any updates between now and its release sometime next year.

Instead of making some sort of accomplishment system that can later be integrated into Home, Digital Extremes created a system of “entitlements” for the PS3 version of Dark Sector that amount to nothing more than in-game pats on the back. More or less what we’ve in Uncharted and Devil Might Cry 4, really, except with no plans to bring them forward into Home. Still, if you can pull off the whole list of things to accomplish, it’s something to be proud of. If you want to figure the entitlements out on your own, we’ve tucked the list away after the jump so as to not spoil it for you. Everyone else, enjoy the list after the jump.

The On the internet Game and Community service conference is coming up and it appears that Home will make an appearance. Maybe not as a playable title, but the subject of a lecture on the 14th of March, according to this cleverly translated BBA site. It would appear the senior producer of the Home project, Riyouzi Akagawa will talk in detail about the community aspects of the virtual world and how services will be provided.

Of course, we’ll keep our ears to the ground on the 14th so we have the ability to detect the tremors of this news when the speech begins. Until then, we’ll just dream about what will be stated.
