If you’ve been looking for a new horror title, Dead Space might just fill the void this October. This developer diary was released and after watching it, you might find yourself a little more interesting in EA’s upcoming space thriller. We know that, after checking out Sunshine on Blu-ray, space can be a pretty amazing place for a motion picture or a game. This one’s shaping up pretty nicely — let’s hope it continues to.

What is this? A new PS3 firmware update? What could be in it? And why such a random number? Mysteries abound in this random late night update. Stay tuned as we download the update and explore the new features of the firmware.

[Update: Doesn’t appear Sony included notes with this firmware update. Most likely a few bug fixes have been included. If we find out more, you can be sure that we’ll update.]

[Thanks, Drew!]

We know that Home is going to be a pretty massive push for in-game advertisements. Maybe not so much a push, but a testing ground for what will and won’t fly with gamers. But user-generated content and the tools provided to the regular ol’ gamer will be the Holy Grail, states creative director Ron Festejo. These tools to aid us in creating original content will be sparse at first, but over time, he hopes to provide everyone with more involving tools.

Of course, there’s going to be lots of moderation with this type of thing. We don’t need someone wearing shirts with phallic symbols all over them. We’ll also be given tools to report and self-moderate this type of thing. Home is probably going to take a lot of lessons from LittleBigPlanet when it comes to what and how heavily to moderate user-generated content. Will you use tools to customize your Home experience?

We thought we’d heard the last of Fatal Inertia after problems with the Unreal Engine 3 forced it to be delayed indefinitely for the PS3. Though it was originally pegged as a PS3 exclusive an Xbox 360 version was released to a fairly mediocre reception. It was assumed that that would be the last of the futuristic racing game, but we were wrong. A new entry has appeared on the ESRB website for Fatal Inertia EX for the PS3.

We guess the fact that the name has been updated (notice the extra “EX”) that this will be an improved version of the game that shipped on the 360. Even so, we’re not interested. Koei are insane if they think that this game is going to be able to compete with WipEout HD. Too tiny too late, Koei. Save yourself the effort and nip this in the bud right now. We don’t want it.

I think it’s safe to state that regardless of what game you’re playing, if a rollergirl is yelling “Kick his ass!” in your ear, it’s going to be a special experience.

That was how I spent my time at EIEIO while playing Wideload Games’ Hail to the Chimp, the upcoming multiplayer-focused party game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In a small outdoor patio area on the main floor of Stubb’s Bar-B-Q in Austin, I spent about twenty-minutes battling other gaming journalists for clams … to the soothing sounds of hollering rollergirls.

“F**k ‘em up, Murgatoyd, f**k ‘em up!” an excited crew of rollergirls rooted from behind me.

The rollergirls were just getting into the spirit, backing their favorite Hail to the Chimp candidate, a pink jellyfish that garbles speeches and swats at opponents with her tentacles. While most party games don’t need a premise (can someone explain to me what’s happening in any of the 18 versions of Mario Celebration?), Hail to the Chimp has a narrative in place to hold it together. The king of the animal kingdom, the Lion, has been dethroned, and ten animals battle it out to gain votes (clams) to become the new ruler of the animal kingdom.

“Get the clams, Daisy! Get the f**king clams!”

The cover “athlete” for this year’s stock automobile racing videogame, NASCAR 09, has just been revealed to be Jeff Gordon. Now, is that not one of the most generic names you’ve ever seen? Apparently, this is a pretty popular “sport” in some backwater parts of the United States. Also, this Jeff Gordon character must be kind of a massive deal, since this will be his third time on the cover of the franchise.

NASCAR 09 is being developed by EA Tiburon, the same guys who do the Madden games. They’ve put together a completely revamped handling system for NASCAR 09. The idea is to grant novices to get into the game easily, but also to provide enough of a challenge for experienced enthusiasts.

Another major addition will be the new career mode, “Sprint for the Cup”. Gordon will act as an in-game mentor and guide to help you on your way to becoming the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion. For more details, check out the press release after the jump. Okay, I’ll level with you — there isn’t much else of substance there.

EA has provided three screenshots for your viewing pleasure (scroll down), even though the cover artwork itself is nowhere to be found. NASCAR 09 will be out in North America on June 10th for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PS2.

Just over a year ago, MotorStorm was released in North America amid much fanfare and hype. It was a PS3 exclusive early in the system’s lifespan, and as such, everybody was anticipating big things. While the general consensus was that it didn’t entirely deliver, sales have proved otherwise — MotorStorm now ranks as the best-selling PS3 title thus far, with over 3 million copies sold worldwide.

For me, though, the game’s lack of variety — it only contained eight tracks, all of them desert-oriented — was too much of a shortcoming to warrant a purchase. That’s why this teaser trailer (it’s CG as opposed to real-time footage, according to GameVideos) has got me all in a tizzy for MotorStorm 2. It showcases a lush Pacific island
