In the latest issue of EDGE Magazine Sam Houser sat down and discussed all things Grand Theft Auto, from 2D to Part IV. While the article is light on new details for the upcoming April 29 release of GTAIV, Rockstar president Sam Houser discusses everything from being the industry scapegoat to the occasional trials and tribulations of working with Ray Liotta. The eager community at GTAForums couldn’t wait for everyone to get their hands on an issue of EDGE and have released scans of all 16-pages on the internet.

The article proves very informative and spans the entire history of Grand Theft Auto. One obvious topic was the Hot Coffee scandal, but interestingly enough Houser describes that his real fear with the infamous situation wasn’t a legal issue at all. “One of my fears when the Hot Coffee thing happened,” Houser explains, “it was going to take this really beautiful piece of work and it was going to be known for something else.”

When the Halo 3 beta was announced gamers were perplexed at the notion that they’d only be able to care about on the internet Halo-hyjinx if they threw down the money for Crackdown. Eventually the “Halo 3 beta with a free copy of Crackdown” jokes out when Crackdown turned out to be a solid title. While we didn’t think anyone would be brave enough to force another purchase on us in hopes to test an anticipated title, we were wrong.

This day GameSpot is reporting that Capcom has outlined plans to follow in Microsoft’s shoes by offering a free beta key for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix to gold Xbox Live members who purchase, the recently renamed, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. Upon spending 800 MS Points ($10) for Commando 3, eligible gamers will be able to take part in the stress test for approximately eight-weeks with access to two classic characters, Ryu and Ken.

The test is scheduled to begin shortly after the release of Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, which hits this Spring. According to Capcom, tests are required to test latency issues for the upcoming XBLA fighting game. Based on Capcom’s past of on the internet fighting issues, we think this test is warranted.

In other news, the sky is blue. But seriously folks, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan has gone on record to say that Grand Theft Auto IV could sell as many as 9 million copies by Halloween 2009 (it just so happens that Take Two’s fiscal year ends on October 31). Furthermore, he expects the first 6 million to be sold within the first week of the game’s availability. Using arcane mathematical wizardry, Pachter also believes that the game could generate an operating profit of $135 million, thus making it responsible for 103% of Take Two’s high end predicted operating profit of $130 million. Yeah, we’re confused too.

Anywho, buried in this prediction is another prediction that the Xbox 360 version of GTAIV will sell 6 million duplicates, leaving 3 million for the PS3. The 6 million estimate is raised concerning the 360 exclusive downloadable content. Pachter doesn’t see the DLC as something that’s prone to succeed, as it would require a download by 50% of GTAIV owners who are also Live members. Not impossible, but not a sure thing either. Pachter concludes by noting that GTAIV looks like the only bright spot in Take Two’s 2008 lineup, saying, “This is clearly a company that’s losing market share, and as we review the lineup for the balance of 2008 and 2009, we see more of the same type of games we’ve seen over the last three years.” We guess releasing the same games repeatedly doesn’t work for everyone.

Bungie has posted a very lengthy chat with Todd McFarlane, big cheese of McFarlane Toys, the company behind the latest line of Halo 3 action figures. In the article, McFarlane details just what goes into the creation of an action figure from the day the project begins to final packaging. The article is also littered with lots of behind-the-scenes imagery like the articulated clay sculpt seen above. Also buried at the bottom of the article is the news that McFarlane is planning to expand the Halo line of toys to include “larger scale, dynamically posed” offerings. Sounds like the perfect thing to adorn one’s cubicle, doesn’t it? Oh, and yes, McFarlane is working on action figures wearing the Recon armor permutation. Much like Bungie is with the in-game variant, McFarlane is still being cagey about what we’ll have to do to obtain one.

When we discovered that the long-rumored Lost Planet: Colonies would be an expansion-of-sorts to the first game, we weren’t exactly thrilled, and exclaimed that it superior hit at the right price. Well, we had nothing to worry about, as 1up is reporting that when the game hits in the US it’ll be at the price point of $29.99. For the thirty dollars, you’ll get even more than we had originally listed, and the scope of the content goes far beyond that of a game such as Ninja Gaiden Black.

The new character models include two new females, two new robots, and five other characters. The new infantry guns are Hand Gun, a Revolver, a Flame Launcher, and Hand Cannon, with the new Mech weapons being the Pile Bunker, a VS Rifle, a Rocket Pod and a Laser Lance. There are four new maps are Crossfire City, Area 921, Lost Arena, and a zero-gravity map, Assault Space. As well as all that, there are a half dozen new multiplayer modes includeing Akrid Hunter, VS Annihalator, CounterGrab, Point Snatcher, Akrid Egg Battle, and Egg Bandit. That’s a lot. Plus, there’s more that we didn’t get to. With all this new content and an even lower price point than we recommended, you can be certain we’ll be picking this one up.

Janco Parters analyst Mike Hickey, as reported by Next Gen, is predicting that the April 29 release of Grand Theft Auto IV might hamper ticket sales of the upcoming (and awesome looking) Iron Man film — releasing the same week on Might 2 — citing that both are aimed at the same demographic. Gamers will remember that similar comments were made regarding the release of Halo 3 and its effect on ticket sales of the same period. While we generally believe that the quality of the film is what’s important, there’s no denying that games are taking up a more significant share of the entertainment market these days. And if one game could derail a theatrical release, it’s Grand Theft Auto IV.

Not long after its release, it was discovered that Army of Two featured a regional lockout that prevented from playing with other parts of the world. In other words, players in North America, Europe, and Asia, have to be content to play with themselves. Hard-nosed problem solvers that they’re, the fine folks at Joystiq got to the bottom of the issue by sticking the question to EA directly. The response from Reid Schneider, senior producer of Army of Two: the regional lockout was implemented to prevent slow connections. It seems that Army of Two requires comparable connection speeds from all users in order to properly sync up gameplay animations. As a result, someone with a slow connection can “bring down” the rest of a group, causing less than desirable play. Thus, the lockout was born. In an interesting note, the Asian version of the game is region locked for an entirely different reason: it doesn’t allow players to shoot corpses. Attempting to make this feature compatible with the other versions over over Xbox Live caused the game to “fail.”

So there you’ve it. There is a dim glow of hope at the end of the tunnel though, as EA is “actively looking into” finding a way to grant cross regional play while still eliminating slow connections.

The UK arms of the Official Xbox and PlayStation magazines dropped fresh details and screens on Gearbox’s upcoming first-person shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines. Set three years after the events in the 1986 sci-fi action classic Aliens, Colonial Marines sets the stage for a rescue group in search of the team sent to investigate a human colony on LV-426 that had broken off communication.

Details on the game have been scarce but GamesRadar detailed a few choice tidbits. The game will feature a mixture of claustrophobic indoor and outdoor environments where basic missions have been scrapped in favor of objective gameplay. The example given is something you can see in the image above. In certain predetermined areas of the game you’ll be forced to “Make a Stand” and survive an onslaught of enemy bugs.

The four-player co-op we previously reported has been confirmed as drop-in and drop-out with system link, split-screen and online support. Also confirmed is that the enemies will have acid blood which will both harm players if they get too close as well change the environment in subtle ways. Lastly, the game will feature quick-time events that OPM thinks will take some getting used to. Well at least most of it sounds awesome.
