Cory Barlog, director of God of War II, recently left Sony to do his own thing — similar to how David Jaffe, director of the first God of War, moved on to creating independent studio “Eat, Sleep, Play.” With the God of War franchise being so successful, why do these directors feel like they have to move on? Well, it’s because of its success. In an interview with Level Up, Barlog reveals his fears of being “the God of War guy” for the rest of his career: “And …

At one point in Rocketmen: Axis of Evil, the main character sighs, shaking his head, wondering “why do I’ve to do this?” At that one moment, I drop my controller — it was then that I felt like the game had starting talking to me. Yes, you’re right, game! Why do I have to play you? Why must I struggle through level after level of insipid, unimaginative game design? How long will it take for me to finish you, so I have the ability to write …

Game Republic, ideal known for Folklore and their PSN outings Toy Home and Dark Mist, have been signed on to produce a title for Brash Entertainment. The game, based on a “popular Hollywood film,” will be released in 2010 for unspecified platforms. Looking at Brash’s history, this doesn’t really bode well - their software library consists of Alvin and the Chipmunks and Jumper: Griffin’s Story. Both of which bombed. Hard.
We’re in two minds, then, about what we can anticipate to see coming in 2010. Game Republic is a …

Sony’s stock has dropped 26% in the past year, for a number of reasons. Undoubtedly, the high costs of PS3 manufacturing and its sluggish performance hasn’t helped Sony’s corporate image.
However, the Wall Street Journal is suggesting that this is actually a good thing for investors. Sony’s stock has always been “undervalued” according to their analysis. However, in recent time the stock has “become even more attractive.”
The video game unit’s quarterly profit and increasing demand for the PS3 is making Sony a much more desirable company to invest in. …

It’s the “in thing” nowadays, seemingly, for companies to leak their upcoming projects during conference calls to investors. Bioshock 2 and Red Faction 3 were both “announced” in this way and now a next-gen Mortal Kombat joins the ever growing list. Midway boss David Zucker spilled the beans during a recent conference call when he talked about “games like This Is Vegas and, of course, you got Mortal Kombat game this year and others that we think have potential to give us higher unit numbers.”
There are …

China isn’t exactly a stranger to video game piracy, but you’d think a major undertaking like the upcoming Beijing Olympics would be able to avoid association with this unseemly process. Not so according to Cadin Batrack, who noticed some extreme similarities between his 2006 flash game Snow Day and the Olympic site’s Fuwa Fight the Olympic Clouds.
The infringing game has been removed from the Olympics site as of Monday, but two other games that are still up on the site seem …

It looks like the rhythm game battle between Activision and Harmonix extends beyond the sales gap between Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, as Harmonix sued Activision on Monday. The suit was withdrawn on Tuesday as the threat of a legal battle was apparently enough to make Activision speak with the company. According to the lawsuit, Harmonix asserts that it is owed $14.5 million in unpaid royalties for the use of its technology in Guitar Hero III and further asserts that the company has not received any money …

In the midst of random industry non-news and other things of little importance comes three screens of the upcoming powerhouse action game, Kung fu Panda. Based on the upcoming movie of the same name, Kung fu Panda allows players to embark on an epic adventure as they master the specialized Kung Fu fighting styles of, title character, Po the Panda. OK, we’ll stop pretending like this is Halo 4 but Activision has done well with their translations of G rated films in both sales and execution. While previous …
