Sometimes I’m a easy man, and these new screenshots for Sega’s Viking: Battle for Asgard certainly talk to my baser instincts. In one screen there’s a giant troll, all battle scarred and dripping with blood. In another screen the game’s protagonist Skarin decapitates an enemy, and another shows him tearing through a torso, exposing what appears to be intestines. Finally, there’s some menacing looking chick wearing a tight leather strapless outfit.
What more can you ask for in this battle between mortal and gods in Asgard, the realm of the Norse Gods? I mean, there’s a story here involving Odin, Freya, and friends … but who cares? You can slice a dude in half, bro. And that chick? She’s totally wearing a strapless leather outfit, dude.
The single-player hack and slash adventure of Viking: Battle for Asgard ships on March 25, and will be available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Oh, and did I mention it’s rated M?

Perhaps its apt timing or name brand (both the comic and the topic), but VG Cats’ Going Online webcomic took first place in this week’s wrapup. Second place goes to newcomer Cectic and third place 2P Begin, beating out by just a handful of votes Dueling Analogs’ morbidly fun Professor Layton comic. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Skill Technology, a start-up founded last year by six Midwesterners, recently announced open beta sign-ups for their first game, Gimme Golf. Designed for the casual gaming market, it looks to combine a fun and intuitive game of golf with social networking and cash prizes. Players can practice their putting and driving on a variety of golf courses designed just for the game, while picking from a number of in-game characters that each have their own one-of-a-kind skill set and personality.
I know that the cynic and skeptic in me came out when I last reported on an online sports game. But to be honest, the initial screenshots and press release (below and after the jump, respectively) look pretty good. I like the game’s semi-realistic art style — the press release mentions “hand-painted graphics” — and Destructoid’s readers certainly know something about being part of an on the internet community.
The game can be played for free, but you can also enter into tournaments with up to 50 participants to win as much as $1,000; the entry fees begin as low as $1. You can sign up for the beta by heading over to the game’s official website, http://www.gimmegolf.com.

NOTE: If you’re wondering what game this is, it’s MUGEN. It’s actually a game engine. Search for M.U.G.E.N on a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. Well, I made a new MUGEN video. I was originally going to use Ryo, but I kept getting my ass whooped so I used Piccolo instead. Characters: Piccolo(Me) by Choujin Eiji(AI) by Ahuron (AI Patch By ホルスの

Videogaming247 wrangled up all of super cool Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu’s reviews from last year and compiled a list of the top twenty-five games of 2007 based on review scores. And, wouldn’t you know, it appears that the Xbox 360 took home ten of the twenty-five spots. ZOMG!
360 games that made top twenty-five honors range from the Halo 3s and the Call of Duty 4s of the world to games like Lost Odyssey and Oblivion. Now, we’re totally aware that we don’t have to tell you how grand games on this top twenty-five list are, because we all know how freakin’ astonishing the 360’s game catalog is. But for a highly respected Japanese gaming mag to give ten of the twenty-five top 2007 games honors to 360 titles … well, that’s newsworthy. Simply put, Japan’s video game culture still doesn’t embrace the Xbox brand, which makes Famitsu’s rankings all the more intriguing. We already know one magazine’s game rankings cannot change the anti-Xbox mindset Japan refuses to let go of, but we also know it doesn’t injured. It’s a crying shame they’re missing out on all the greatness that’s the 360 … oh well, their loss. Complete top twenty-five list posted after the break.

In-game advertising. Just saying the words invoke anger to Bruce Banner proportions for some gamers. Today EA and Large announced a two-year extension you should probably go shopping for purple shorts.
Bringing advertising to such EA hits as Burnout, Madden, NBA Live, NHL and Nascar to the Xbox 360 and Computer means that Microsoft owned in-game ad firm Huge and EA will continue to mask our gaming worlds with ads marketed for 18 to 34 year-old males. Gamers from other consoles shouldn’t consider themselves lucky though, soon enough Xbox 360 owners will be able to download the Burger King Whopper Launcher in Army of Two for a mere 250 MS Points*!
*Oh, I hope that joke doesn’t come back to bite us.

For those of you who’ve been obsessively refreshing Bungie.net, awaiting today’s promised huge Legendary Map Pack reveal, your wait is going to be a little longer.
Bungie’s Luke jumped onto the NeoGAF forums to inform the masses that their publisher (Microsoft) “has altered the deal and changed the date of the press release to Wednesday.” And a quick glance at our calendar tells us that this day is Tuesday, so tomorrow should be Wednesday. Thus, no Legendary Map Pack announcement this day, and no Sidewinder remake confirmation (wink, wink). We all join hands with Luke and pray that our information comes tomorrow and not a day later.
