Some Gears of War 2 news just hit the wire a tiny while ago (we’ve been itching for some) with word from Microsoft telling us that two new GoW2 videos from this year’s GDC are available for download off of the Xbox Live Marketplace. Both videos are available for download in high definition, one being the Unreal Engine tech demo we featured a while back (meat cube and all) as well as a behind the scenes video where Capps and Cliffy B do a swift shout-out prior to GoW2’s announcement at GDC. We’re taking Cliffy’s advice and already have our bucket ready for this November’s release.

Aha! The Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack rumors were sort of true when, moments ago, Bungie announced the third and final map that’ll be included in Halo 3’s upcoming set of DLC. The map is called Blackout and yes, it is a remake of Halo 2’s Lockout. W00t, w00t!

Just as Avalanche is to Sidewinder, Blackout is a straight up remake of everyone’s favorite Halo 2 map Lockout, complete with ramps, ledges and multiple levels of mayhem. The differences are minimal and cosmetic with Blackout being set on a UNSC Antarctic weather station and it also receives the honor of being the first map to be set during the night. And from the few screenshots we are privy to, this is no Guardian folks. Blackout looks almost identical to our friend Lockout and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Jump over to Bungie.net to read a Q&A with the map designers, get the Blackout scoop and start to countdown the days until April 15th when Ghost Town, Avalanche and Blackout grace the Marketplace. Happy, happy, joy, joy!

After getting some swift hands on time with Halo Wars, CVG informs us that Ensemble Studios’ latest RTS child is delivering on their promises and will be bringing something new to the console RTS market.

According to CVG, Halo Wars strays from the traditional console RTS controls as seen in Battle for Middle Earth and C&C, instead using a much more simplistic “paint” selection control scheme. Definitely a good thing. Ensemble is even going out of their way to redefine the RTS formula and instead of focusing the gameplay on resource management, you’ll have to focus on time management and unit management. Just like in the Halo universe, decisions will have to be made strategically as you’ll have to decide when to shoot and when to take cover. Simply said, Ensemble knows they and Halo Wars are under the magnifying glass and are making it their number one priority to deliver a solid RTS experience. Our fingers are crossed.

Update: While the cover art was confirmed as a fake, Bungie has confirmed that the last map is Blackout - the successor to Lockout! More information can be found on the official post from Luke Smith.

We feel like the guys at MythBusters today. Three myths have been busted by the trusted experts here at Fanboy Towers. This one, we’re sad to state, involves the Halo 3 Lockout map remake magazine cover we reported over the weekend.

The rumor was that the upcoming Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack would include a remade version of the Halo 2 map Lockout along with Avalanche (a remade Sidewinder) and Ghost Town. Regarding the Dutch magazine’s cover, Bungie’s Frank O’Connor and Louis Wu have confirmed the magazine is a fake and Halo.Bungie.Org user RVideo was kind enough to deconstruct the cover and compare it to actual Power Unlimited cover art. Looks like this one is busted folks, but here’s something to consider - the cover has been confirmed busted but no one said anything about the last map not being Lockout! By the way, don’t hold your breath folks!

We already know that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue looks real purdy. Now Sony sends along details on how next month’s release will sound.

A press release tells us that soundtrack is headlined by an in-game exclusive remix of Weezer’s “Automatic,” from the band’s upcoming album and an EL-P remix of Mars Volta’s “Goliath.”

We’ve known for a while that Nintendo’s just-launched-in-Japan WiiWare service would require an additional fee for some downloadable content. Tiny did we know that content would include a pretty fundamental part of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.

SiliconEra is reporting (via Square’s Japanese web site) that players who pay 1,500 Wii Shop Points to purchase the ridiculously-abbreviated FFCC:MLaaK will only have access to one of the game’s races. Players wishing to recruit any of the other three races will have to spend 100 to 300 Wii Shop Points to construct a home for them. Players will also be able to lay down real money for new character costumes, which don’t seem to have any effect on the gameplay.

Given the controversy surrounding the pricing of additional gameplay content for Lumines Live, we can’t imagine Wii owners will be happy shelling out 1,500 points for what’s essentially an incomplete product. Then again, the wide variety of Final Fantasy collectibles suggests a fan base willing to shell out whatever it takes to get their dose of apocalyptic, Japanese RPG goodness. We’ll see soon enough, we suppose.

Netflix told Reuters today that it’s been surveying its subscribers about interest in streaming movies using the Xbox 360. The company declined to go as far as saying this meant there was a partnership in the works, but did state it’s looking to use “as many ways as possible” to provide its service to consumers.

The whole “Netflix on consoles” thing has been batting around for a while with reports last month that Netflix was running surveys to gauge consumer interest. Netflix has made no secret that it wants to be on consoles and our eyebrows were already raised way up early last year when Netflix CEO Reed Hastings joined the Microsoft board of directors. If Microsoft doesn’t want to go down the Blu-ray path, but still wants to offer a service that makes it stand out, Netflix would certainly make a marquee substitute.

The day you’ve been waiting for is here — if you’re a Japanese Wii owner with a hankering for downloadable games, that’s. Yes, Nintendo’s game download service WiiWare has finally launched in Japan and, with the help of our friends over at Wii Fanboy, we’ve rounded up a bunch of information on the roll out from around the web, including:

We’re also following news about the service’s implementation of downloadable content, which has shown up in three games so far. Look for more on that in a bit.

Happy free Heroic Map Pack day everyone! For those with a tiny patience, you’ll be rewarded this day with Halo 3’s former $10 set of maps for the cost of air (but not PerriAir; that the Spaceballs still charge for). The pack includes Standoff, Rat’s Nest and Foundry. While we’d love to tell you all about these levels, we’re getting our first taste of them this day.

With all that stated, there’s currently a hiccup in the system and the content - which was supposed to be free at 2AM pacific last night - is still listed for $10 on Xbox Live Marketplace. Bungie’s forum has a nice thread (about to break 100 pages) on the issue and we’re trying to get an answer from Major Nelson for the Microsoft angle. We’ll update when the map pack actually becomes, you know … free.

Update: It’s free now, go get ‘em.

As part of the this week’s Xbox Live Arcade new release announcement, Microsoft also mentioned that Atomic Elbow’s previously released Switchball is going to be re-released this Wednesday, March 26th. With the re-release, Switchball will benefit by receiving a graphical upgrade as well as a smoother gameplay experience that (for whatever reason) can lead to higher scores. Hopefully the graphical tears will disappear as well. We also gather that all current Switchball owners will be able to get all the new enhancements via a title update. Happy rolling!
