Here’s a bit of history for you folks: John Madden has had his name on EA-developed football games since the Reagan era. The first was John Madden Football, which came out for the C64 and Apple II on June 1, 1988 (it was also later released for the Genesis). The most current was Madden NFL 08, which was released on August 14, 2007. Now, EA has come full-circle: they’ll be putting out a 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of Madden NFL 09. And why not? Premium-priced special editions have become all the rage these days.

The Collector’s Edition will be available alongside the no-frills version of Madden NFL 09; both will launch on the same day, August 12th. But for your $89.99, you’ll actually be getting two full games: the Collector’s Edition will include full versions of Madden NFL 09 and NFL Head Coach 09, in addition to “exclusive classic Madden NFL gameplay, and an extensive library of exclusive bonus video content”.

There’s some rather curious phrasing in the press release that caught my eye (see for yourself after the jump). Towards the end, it says the following:

NFL Head Coach 09 is scheduled to ship only as a part of the Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, which, at a suggested retail price of $89.99 for the complete package of Madden NFL 09 and NFL Head Coach 09 plus additional exclusive bonus content, will ship on the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION

This is it, folks: the final trailer for Rockstar’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV. After this there’s only waiting to look forward to until the game hits shelves on April 29.

What do I think, you ask? Well, I think it looks great. I love the scope of all the action. I love the voice acting. I love the polish. I love the rain. Most importantly, though, I love the way it all feels like GTA, just a lot shinier.

But my humble view doesn’t matter. What do you all think? Are you more excited than ever? Is this enough of a final tease to get you through this last agonizing month?

Apparently somebody pulled one Hell of an April Fool’s prank on those guys at Epic, and convinced them that Christmas has been moved to that latter part of March. How else can we explain the love that’s been raining down on us from above recently, in the form of Unreal Tournament III updates?

Just last week, we were treated to a patch, that among other things, fixed some sound issues, and made it a heck of a lot easier to download mods for the game via the PS3. Sign in today, and you’ll find yet another update, but this time of Epic proportions — 3 new maps: Morbias, Facing Worlds, and Searchlight. Longtime fans are sure to recognize the first two, while Searchlight is new in town, and made especially for those who like to go for rounds of capture the flag gameplay. Ideal of all, they are all free for the taking. Take that, microtransactions!

The maps are available for Personal computer users as well, and can be found here. For those of you who wish to join us on the internet, Destructoid’s own MrSadistic and Sadie are more than willing to welcome challengers and help them cultivate some of that personal humility that some would say is missing in today’s youth. Rumor has it that at least one them has a penchant for “shooting you in the face,” so be careful. Who knows? Playing as Master Chief

As most of you already know, Grand Theft Auto IV will be released on April 29. Although its launch will undoubtedly be big in and of itself, Rockstar Games is going even further by unleashing a new Web site called the Rockstar Social Club on the very same day.

In addition to having leaderboards that follow your various in-game statistics, performance-based competitions and awards will also appear on the site. You’ll be able to register using your gamertag or PSN ID as early as April 15, so that way we don’t all sign up on GTA IV’s release day and bring down the servers.

Specific details on some of the different challenges we’ll see on the Rockstar Social Club can be found after the break.

Spurred on by the apparent success of anti-KFC game Super Chick Sisters, PETA is once again entering the Flash-based interactive activism arena with Bloody Burberry: The Fur Fighters. This time, the action focuses on controlling cute animal critters who are trying to raise awareness of the cruel, fur-coat-selling ways of the Burberry clothing stores. They complete this goal by freeing caged bunnies, protesting at fashion shows and spray-painting coats, all while avoiding some shadowy, black-clad security agents.

You might think a game that encourages spray-painting private property might be a tiny irresponsible for an activist group, but an in-game disclaimer notes that it’s all right because the animal characters are “not subject to human laws.” It’s like the ultimate diplomatic immunity! This gives us an idea for a crime spree involving trained penguins that the courts can’t touch … but perhaps we’ve already said too much ….

This week’s PSN update brings a hearty dose of content. Warhawk, which has an update and expansion incoming, is on sale the next couple weeks for $30 (normally $40). There’s also a flOw bundle for $9 that includes the game plus expansion. UT3 players should make sure to pick up their free maps; meanwhile, High Stakes poker players with a PlayStation Eye can download the free camera add-on and show off how they play poker naked from their living room couch. The reason for the late PSN update today was because the embargo on the Grand Theft Auto IV trailer (available on PSN) had to lift, so check that out just to give purpose to this delay.

We’ll put a link to PS3 Fanboy’s Euro update as soon as we get it — we’re thinking it was delayed because of the GTA IV trailer as well.

Taking a cue from Bungie’s stat-a-riffic Bungie.net service, Rockstar Games has just announced the Rockstar Games Social Club, “a new website that will extend your experience of Grand Theft Auto IV and all future Rockstar Games titles.” Line up against the Club’s stanchions at rockstargames.com/socialclub and be ready for registration on April 15th. All you’ll need is a Xbox Live gamertag and/or a PSN ID and an insatiable hunger for statistics. You’ve got one of those, right?

Once GTA IV launches, the site will offer the usual multiplayer leaderboards, along with a torrent of statistically generated functionality. The LCPD Police Blotter will show the most dangerous areas of Liberty City and the most commonly used weapons, using the “aggregated data of millions of connected players.” Similarly, the Liberty City Marathon will catalog the “the amount of miles walked, driven, or swam — to the number of bullets fired and stunt-jumps jumped” and will hold competitions amongst players using this data. Other sections will track players who complete 100% of the game (they can win an “ultra-rare” bit of swag); a Hall of Fame, tracking the various leaderboard champs; and The Story Gang, a “single-player leaderboard.” Consider us interested. You could think about us even more interested if we knew the first thing about the game’s multiplayer functionality, outside of the occasional rumor.

The screen scrolling shoot-em is a genre that’s looking to more fully cement itself on XBLA soon, and Ikaruga will be one of the games that will allow it to do that. With a release date of 04/09/2008, April 4th 2008, fans of the incredibly hardcore co-op shooter will should be be happy, as thats the release date leaked onto the Japanese xbox.com site earlier this day. We haven’t heard much about this game so far, and with this info showing up on the Japanese version of xbox.com, it’s possible that the English localization of the XBLA version isn’t ready. We’ll find out soon either way, now all we need is the game’s price point, and since this isn’t an original creation hopefully its not as costly as another approaching-release XBLA game.
