We didn’t know wrestling was still popular enough to warrant an annual release, but over the weekend THQ dropped the trailer for WWE: Smackdown vs. Raw 2009. The video showcases the latest feature for the upcoming title, co-op story mode. While we’re sure there’s still a group of fans clamoring for a “chair-shot to the face” good time, we wonder if we really need another WWE game each year? Madden’s annual release already gets us annoyed but we comprehend the reasoning behind it, but does including one new addition and swapping some characters in the roster really need another $60 price tag?

We have super, fantastic, astounding, glorious, superb and geeky Rock Band news for you this day. Hmxsean just announced tomorrow’s Rock Band downloadable content (seeing that it wasn’t announced last Friday) and folks, it’s finally here. Revealed back during GDC, Portal’s hit song “Still Alive” by Jonathan Coulton will be available for download tomorrow off the XBLM for (get this) 0 Microsoft points. Yes sir, they’re offering the “Still Alive” Rock Band DLC for FREE! And even though it’s April Fool’s day tomorrow, we don’t anticipate this announcement to be a fool. Because, if it were, Harmonix employees would have to fear for their lives. We just have to say it again, but this time in caps … “STILL ALIVE” WILL BE A FREE ROCK BAND DOWNLOAD TOMORROW! W00T!
Also, just to fuel the fanboy fires, the rockers over on the Playstation 3 will have to wait a few weeks to get their “Still Alive” DLC fix. Mwahahaha, enjoy!
[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

If you were a game publisher and I pitched the below idea to you, what would you think?
“Okay, so I have the ideal idea for a videogame. You play as a cool guy wearing a trench coat, okay? And you run into a school and try to lift up as many girls’ skirts as possible. Now, the difficulty level will be on a scale of one to five panties. One being the easiest, of course. Hehehe. Yeah, I stated panties. Oh, and there will be a couple of bonus levels. One of them will have you lifting skirts for bread and the other one will have you feeling up a bronze statue. Yeah, I like bread. Hehehe. Oh, and you can also get cool power-ups to, ya’ know, lift up more skirts and stuff. Hehehe. So, what do you think?” *wipes sweat covered brow*
Raving lunatic? Dirty old man? Both? Well, you’re absolutely right in thinking the idea is certifiable, but, surprisingly, it actually exists in the form of flash game Mekuri Master. And you kind of have to click here right now to play it. Seriously, click. Right now. It is incredible.
Jim Sterling thinks he may have found the greatest flash game ever, but I think Mekuri Master may give it a run for its money. If anything, it is definitely the creepiest, right?
What do you think? Amazing or ridiculously astonishing?

As early as last year, Midway has gone as far as to admit a new, Unreal Engine 3.0-powered Mortal Kombat title is in the works. While details have been scarce, that soon may be coming to an end. A countdown has appeared on Noob.com, a Web site registered to Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon — so what’s next?
There’s not much to go on, other than the fact that the Web site’s logo bears the iconic Mortal Kombat logo. Coincidentally, the countdown ties in nicely with Midway’s upcoming Gamer’s Day, which takes place in Las Vegas on April 17. I’ve never claimed to be smart, but it does seem like a safe bet that we’ll see some information on the next iteration of the Mortal Kombat franchise in the coming month. I’m also going to say that it will be a fighting game — you heard it here first, folks.
I’ll be sure to pass along any updates from Midway’s Las Vegas event as soon as I have the ability to shake the resulting hangover. Midway might not be able to spell “combat” correctly, but they sure know how to party.

SCEE has unveiled its PlayStation Store redesign, which is scheduled to launch in “mid-April.” Weekly content updates will cease for the next two weeks until the redesign goes live, but “users can look forward to a special update in mid-April,” Sony Europe teased in a press release. In addition, users will continue to have access to the store’s back catalog as they await the mid-April relaunch. The redesign won’t affect existing PlayStation Network accounts or the virtual wallet.
The store redesign has been previously confirmed for North America and will release sometime in April. SCEA has yet to announce the exact release date, which may or may not coincide with the European update. Update: SCEA has announced the North American “revamp” will arrive via firmware update in “mid-April” (presumably day and date with the European update). Sony clarified that beginning April 3, no new content will be added to the store until the redesign is launched.

Microsoft has announced that Hollywood producer/talent producer Peter Safran has signed a deal with the company to produce original content for Xbox Live (via The New York Times). The first shows will scripted (i.e. not reality shows), run under 10 minutes in length and are expected to come out in the Fall.
Stated Scott Nocas, Xbox Live’s global marketing manager for programming: “We definitely look at this as the first of many.” The shows, according to Safran, will be exclusive to the service for a time and might then appear elsewhere. Safran also stated that some of the content would be supported by advertising.
As noted by the NYT, Safran represents Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Nia Vardolos (My Massive Fat Greek Wedding) and the directors of Epic Movie. Safran said he anticipates to recruit “established filmmakers” but wasn’t planning to seek out major motion picture stars.

It says something when the ideal game being released this week is a re-release of a game that originally launched last November. Then again, it’s not like it’s that surprising. After all, the game in question is Call of Duty 4 and there’s only one other game releasing this week. That game, if you just have to know, is Smash Court Tennis 3. No offense to Smash Court Tennis 3, but it’s frickin’ Call of Duty 4, right? Actually, to be more precise, it’s Call of Duty 4 Game of the Year Edition. Not only do you get COD4 goodness, but also a token to download the Variety Map Pack free of charge. Heck of a deal, no?

Word on the web street is that our corporate pals over at Capcom have gobbled up the rights to the MotoGP franchise for the next five years. This new franchise agreement will have Capcom releasing a new MotoGP game based on the 2008 season that should makes its way across all consoles (even cell phones) including the Xbox 360. We believe this to be pretty dandy good news for MotoGP fans as we’ll see a re-vitalization of sorts, but we’ve to fear that Capcom may modify whatever recipe MotoGP has followed in years previous. Oh, and the fact that they already have plans to whore the franchise out across each single platform known to man worries us just a touch.
