When the Heroic map pack was being touted by Bungie, their biggest speaking point was the Forge possibilities with the map Foundry. With the Legendary map pack Bungie has been rather quiet regarding any sort of new Forge features. Until now. This week Bungie went all out, revealing the specialized Forge items for each of the three Legendary maps. Avalanche has walls, corners, ramps and watchtowers. Blackout has ramps and doors to block off room interiors. And Ghost Town has ramps, bridges and scaffolding.
The real star of the show however, are Forge Filters (see above for a preview of a few). Forge Filters are: “forge objects that change the camera settings to create a variety of effects.” Have you ever placed your camera in a very specific location to reach a precise image effect? Say inside of an explosion or something? Now with Forge Filters, you can CHOOSE the image effect you want applied to you image. And from ANY camera position, even during gameplay!
Wow. Do want.

We go ahead and announce a social gaming night and Xbox Live goes and hits the slow setting! According to some readers, Xbox Live is experiencing slowdown reminiscent of the Holiday ‘07 debacle. The general guess is that the popularity of the recently released Call of Duty 4 map pack might have a hand in the current network situation.
While some readers are experiencing login issues, download errors and general feeling of the service being dragged through molasses, we’ve been receiving friend requests for the last hour and a half for tonight’s large game while connected to Xbox Live without any issues other than a slow performance from the Xbox Live Marketplace.
Even though Xbox Live is acting up we’re still trucking along with tonight’s X3F Live! So make sure to add the gamertag X3FLIVE to your Friend’s list. Hey, now that we consider it, maybe the lag will help with our sniping!

We’ve seen Dan Paladin of The Behemoth create levels before, and here he’s back again. The Castle Crasher’s dev blog was recently updated with a video of Dan building the Industrial Castle level, as well as a few scans of OXM’s pages on the game in their most current issue. As with any demonstration of this sort it’s extraordinary to watch the artist at work, and we’re just glad that this has been sped up to a decent speed. Our only complaint is that there’s no music to this one!
Other than the video, there were the scans, which revealed a few interesting, previously unknown things. First, there’s the Arena Multiplayer mode with it’s four different competitive modes: Free for All, Arrow Challenge, Beefy Beat-Up and Treasure Battle. Second are some smaller things, like the fact that there is an unlockable fish for a weapon, and that you can get a shovel that’ll yet you dig for treasure. We can’t wait for this game, and the more info that gets released, the more our anticipation grows!

It has been some time since we got anything out of Criterion about their DLC. The last massive news was that some the islands available for download would be free, with no mention of what the islands would be like or what would happen on them. Well since the opening of their dev blog was designed to rectify situations like this, the team posted two new videos giving a brief glimpse of the island and the ride there.
From the only released image we have the ability to tell that Criterion is going for a slick vacation feel and the first video is an eye in the sky view that gives us an idea of the size that Criterion has in mind (big!). The second video is a bit longer than the first and showcases the Dust Storm’s journey into and around the city, giving us an on-the-ground feel for the size (again, big!).
The second video can be found after the break.

Thought by many to have been canceled, the newest Gundam game has just been given its Japanese release date. As a game that borrows a great deal from games such as Battlefield, it’s a bit strange to see that Mobile Suit Gundam: Operation Troy isn’t seeing a worldwide simultaneous release date. Announced via a press release on the Japanese version of xbox.com, Operation Troy will be seeing release June 26 in Japan.
As noted, the game is inspired by Battlefield, but replacing the copters and tanks are, as you likely guessed, Mobile Suits (nerd fact: not all Mobile Suits are Gundams). Despite the game’s abysmal graphics, an open-world FPS with properly-scaled Mobile Suits has a lot of potential. And even though the Gundam games don’t exactly have a history of exceptional quality, we’d like to give the devs a chance to get it wrong before we rip into it. So, here’s hoping for an eventual localization.

Considering that their game is the most-played game on Live, it seems a bit strange that Call of Duty 4 would be taking cues from its defeated opponent. Yet to celebrate the release of the Variety Map pack, Infinity Ward is doing just that, taking a leaf out of Bungie’s book and creating their very own version of the Double EXP Weekend. The COD4 weekend is a bit different than the Halo 3 system however. In Halo 3 the boosted EXP is limited to a specific playlist: Grifball. In Hal- er, we mean COD4, the EXP is doubled any time a match is played on the Variety DLC maps. So while you’re effectively paying for the new EXP, it is good to see Infinity Ward taking preemptive steps to match anything that could lead to Halo 3 coming back to the top. Competition breeds excellence right?
We have no info on whether or not the Double EXP Weekend will be a recurring thing with COD4, but the current one ends on Sunday at midnight.

Yeah, so … we’ll just cut to the chase here sidestepping all the fluff. Next week’s Rock Band DLC (which good old hmxsean just posted over on the official Rock Band forums) is going to be a re-hashed re-release. Remember those three exclusive OXM downloads that were included in the magazine way back in January? Well, they’re going to be for sale via the XBLM on April 9th and that’s all were getting for DLC. For 80 Microsoft points per track or 240 points for all three songs bundled, you can grab “Rock Rebellion” by Bang Camaro, “Shake” by Count Zero and “Super Sprode” by Freezepop. We’d be lying if we didn’t admit we’re a bit disappointed seeing that anyone who was excited for these “exclusive” tracks probably picked up a copy of OXM a few months back. For those who really weren’t excited and still aren’t … well, there’s always next week. Humph.

Nothing says happy Friday like seeing a twisted and freaky bloody monster-thing doing the crab walk all while he tries to eat off your face. Lovely. Embedded after the break you can view the latest “Abomination” trailer for Monolith’s F.E.A.R. sequel Project Origin and between the freaky crab person bits, we get to see actual gameplay. And if we ever mocked Project Origin’s graphics before, we take back those statements because (visually) it looks dandy fine. Okay, back to watching the bloody crab walk …
