Update: Added a link to the original smarthouse article.
According to a recent news channel survey of 10 different Australian video games retailers (with over 2000 stores spread across the continent): “The Xbox 360 is dead. We’re stocking it because of our relationship with Microsoft …” If that’s not a huge statement to you, just wait, we’ve got more. The same retailer claims that the other two consoles are succeeding due to the appeal to children/women, and Blu-ray, respectively. They think the 360 brand can’t really be redeemed after the RROD, and that the value proposition offered by Microsoft did not seem equal in comparison to the competition.
Furthermore, the Australian retailers are considering dropping the console from stores entirely: “We are stocking it because of our relationship with Microsoft, however all our energy and marketing is going into the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii unless Microsoft come up with something new or additional marketing dollars,.” “Halo 3 was massive on the Xbox but that was about it.” “They have tried discounting and value add offers and even that’s not working. We are even thinking of dumping the console all together.”

Responding to a thread on the official Epic Games forums regarding a rumored Might release for the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament III, Epic’s Mark Rein responded that no release date has been set. Rein noted that the Xbox 360 version would be featured for press at Midway’s upcoming Gamers Day event in Las Vegas. Rein closed off his statements letting fans know that the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament III was, “coming along really nicely.” Let’s just hope this version strikes a chord with fans at retail.

Update: As of this morning the Xbox.com support page says the service should be back up to speed.
Updating you from our story a few hours ago comes new information regarding the say of Xbox Live. A tiny under an hour ago Microsoft and Activision have acknowledged the issues that have plagued the Xbox Live and Xbox Live Marketplace services. A notice was posted on the Xbox.com support page as well as the above message found on the Game of the Year Map activation page for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
While no formal reasoning is given the community finger has points squarely on the Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4 that released earlier today. Although we’re assured via Twitter, “the team is aware of issues w/ LIVE” from Xbox Live’s Major Nelson, we wonder how the service will cope on April 29 as the world attempts to experience Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV.

“Wake up, Samus!”
“What is it, Weekly Webcomic Wrapup?”
“I just had the craziest dream. I was in the movie theater with my mother and grandmother and we were trying to decide what to purchase tickets for. There were two movies: A Flicker, and one called Ludwig Kietzmann.”
“Isn’t that your editor?”
“Yeah, but there’s nothing weird about dreaming about your superior’s name, is there? … Anyway, so we purchase tickets to Flicker, and we walk into the theater — no larger than my college dorm room, mind you — and the screen starts showing BioShock footage. It was an origins of BioShock movie, except instead of splicers the people turned into demons. And the Huge Daddy, he was skipping and dancing around like from a 1950s musical!”
“Skipping? Webby, I think you need to stick to your namesake.”
(Voting after the break.)

Me and my friends rocking our asses off in rock band. It doens’t look care about it but we did, and we’d lots of fun. Purchase it…it’s worth it! And yes I’m the terrible unsightly thing in the blue shirt playing guitar on the back. And don’t mind my stupid looking hair…it’s supposed to be all messed up on the front but for some reason it turned into pumkin just right there on that song. xD…

Next Generation was able to catch up with 2K Marin Creative Director, Jordan Thomas, after a presentation on emergent gameplay he delivered at University of Teesside’s Animex festival. Next Gen’s interview is in the main concerned with gameplay theory, but towards the end shifts focus to Bioshock 2. As his presentation and interview had to do with emergent gameplay, Next Gen assumes that this will be a larger focus in Bioshock 2. Thomas comments that “I really like the idea of the player being able to create dynamic physical attachments - Rube Goldberg machines of death!” which gives us a pretty good idea of the creative direction that the sequel will be taking.
Along with that choice quote was another one that was hopefully a bit more of a promise than a hyperbole: “in the future I’ll want to generate much more of that - maybe give the player the capability to steal superpowers from characters that are wandering around the world, or modify their behavior in ways that amount to more than just getting them to fight each other. There’s a lot of potential real estate there.” So long as they make good on that potential, we’ll be here to play it.
