The Team Fortress 2 Gold Rush update is now available for free download via Steam. The update includes the Gold Rush map with its own gameplay style dubbed Payload. Perhaps more important than the map, this update marks the first set of new achievements and unlockable weapons.

The first class to receive the update is the Medic, who can earn three new weapons — Blutsauger, Kritzkrieg and Ubersaw — obtained by earning 12, 24 or all 36 new medic accomplishments, respectively. All the new achievements, including a complete Medic icon set (PNG files) can be found at the Gold Rush site.

Update:
It’s also worth noting that this weekend, May 2 - 4, Steam users can play Team Fortress 2 for free. That includes the Gold Rush update. You can pre-load the game now.

Rock Band fanboys who never plan on ever going back to the Guitar Hero days yet fully support Steven Tyler and his band will be shedding a tear today. Shedding a tear because it was just revealed that Aerosmith struck a deal with the Guitar Hero franchise allowing them exclusive use of their music, meaning no Aero love for Harmonix or Rock Band. Which isn’t all that surprising seeing that Activision has been treating Aerosmith like royalty lately, with plans of releasing a special Guitar Hero: Aerosmith edition later this June and licensing their likeness, names and music. All said, Rock Band owners can still experience a bit of Aerosmith with the game’s “Train Kept A Rollin” track which was licensed prior to the band’s agreement with Activision. It’ll be the only Aerosmith Rock Band sees for a long, long while.

As copies of GTAIV fly off retail shelves in what’s almost guaranteed to be an all-time video game sales record, Take-Two’s CEO thinks analysts have underestimated GTAIV’s sales.

Take-Two’s own Ben Feder talked to Reuters about their internal GTAIV sales estimates saying that “our expectations are very high, higher than analysts give the game credit for” and that “all the analysts had a (sales) number, give or take, and I think we’ll be on the upside of that rather than the downside.” Lofty goals Mr. Feder, but we’ve a funny feeling your excessive optimism is actually warranted this time.

It seems crime has taken a serious jump in the last few hours and the only place affected has been the little known city called, Liberty City. According to the LCPD Crime Blotter, crime is up almost 900 million percent from yesterday alone! While we could only speculate what could have caused the spike, we think it’s safe to state that it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets any better.

In all seriousness, the LCPD Blotter (which tracks multiplayer statistics in Grand Theft Auto IV; available on the Rockstar Games Social Club) showcases some large numbers for a title inching-in on its first 12 hours of release (more in the European/Australian region).

Some of the more interesting numbers include:

  • Crime rate up 848,780,099% from previous day
  • 24,700 criminals have been arrested
  • 781,556 automobiles have been stolen
  • 8,241,576 call outs have been made
  • 221,525 N.O.O.S.E. call outs have been made

Remember kids, crime doesn’t pay. Unless you rob them after you hit them with your vehicle that’s.

Aside from securing exclusive downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV and being the primary promoter of the game in ongoing advertisements is there anything else Microsoft can do to make GTA IV standout? How about give away a month of Xbox Live service to everyone who buys the game? According to THEBBPS, and verified when we all cracked open our retail duplicates, GTA IV includes a one-month free trail for Xbox Live Gold service which allows players to take their experience on the web.

Ordinarily Microsoft packages 48-hour trial cards with choose titles to entice gamers to go on the web but with the popularity of GTA IV and the potential increase of membership activations this looks like a smart strategic move on their part. Maybe this is what they meant by future growth of the service the last time they did system maintenance?

Unlike what Richard faced at Wal-Mart while picking up his copy of Grand Theft Auto IV at midnight, I saw me some crazy lines! Each gamer in Mississauga (near Toronto aka the Greater Toronto Area) must have turned up for the title because lines were large! The shot you see above was the scene for the epic GTAIV Elite Console giveaway, which I wasn’t able to snag a picture of, and after the jump is a picture of the line at my local EB Games.

Hundreds of people turned out in total at both locations but that isn’t even the crazy part. The crazy thing is both stores are in the same plaza! Within a five minute walk customers can hit-up EB Games, Ideal Buy and FutureShop and all were opened for the midnight event (I didn’t personally see FutureShop opened but someone told me they were).

Arriving on the scene at around 11:30 PM EST I jumped out of my automobile and snapped a few photos of the Best Purchase launch and then made my way down the plaza to the EB Games that I had pre-ordered the Special Edition. After waiting in line for about an hour, fueled by coffee and water, I had to make a tough decision. Sacrifice my bladder for the rest of my existence or get myself to the closest Tim Horton’s on the ASAP!

I left. When I came back the line wasn’t nearly as bad but I still waited for a while noticing the people who were behind me leaving as I arrived back on the scene! I pondered hitting the Ideal Purchase, which was empty come 1:00 AM anyway, but I already paid for the title in full. According to my receipt I bought the game at 1:53 AM.

Yes, I’ve been awake ever since.
