kratos

A job posting for an Online Gameplay Programmer to join “the team behind the critically acclaimed AAA titles God of War and God of War II” (oh, just say it: the team developing God of War III) suggests that Kratos’ next romp in Neverland might require some expertise in networking protocols and architectures. You know, give the ol’ Ghost of Sparta a playable sidekick, some comic relief. Recall that at the God of War II launch, Cory Balrog (this was before he bounced from SCEA) said co-op was being considered for the third console game, at least, in theory: “If we can do something one-of-a-kind with [co-op], yeah, but it is really an early exploration of that in my head really. It’s not even a discussion with the team.” Obviously, Barlog got around to planting that seed before he departed.

The listing does include a rather ambiguous disclaimer though, which potentially disavows the job altogether: “Please be advised that the following job description may not reflect a position that’s currently available. This job description might exist to simply gather interest, and may or may not ever become an approved open position.” Whatever, we all know that next-gen AAA ain’t “next-gen AAA” without on the internet co-op, right?

Yeesh, that was swift. Just around two months after it was put before the public, EA announced via a blog post that EA-Land (which was The Sims Online rebranded) would be closing up shop on August 1. Current subscribers can get $15 off a game at the EA Store or a three-month membership to Pogo.

Unsurprisingly, that hasn’t satisfied most fans, who were able to spend real-world money to improve their EA-Land experience. Threads (here and here) were flooded with comments from users like:

“Well. I’m SO freaking glad that I put so much REAL LIFE money into this game. Thank you for letting us ALL down.”

“Did I mention I just payed $150 last night for the founders account I’ve always dreamed of. Way to go… Perhaps you could have told someone sooner.”

“I really just can’t believe it’s going to be over…..and I really can’t believe they think a few months of POGO can make up what we’re losing here.”

Some of the comments were more conciliatory, some even began plans to buy the game outright. But it was clear that even if the world itself might be dying it leaves behind an impassioned, angry populace.

Well, as we all know by now, Grand Theft Auto IV, arguably the biggest release of the year and a truly cultural event, was released this day. You can hardly move on the internet for discussion about this notorious sequel, but Destructoid would be wrong to ignore that discussion and simply not provide its views on the current-gen revitalization of Rockstar’s flagship.

For me, it wasn’t the so much the violent content of the game that proved the most controversial, but the actual gameplay mechanics themselves. Rockstar seems to have gone to a lot of effort to makes this new installment of the GTA franchise a very different, very new experience. Some of the changes were for the superior, others not so much.

Hit the jump for our take on some of the biggest changes in Grand Theft Auto IV.

Being fanboys, we just can’t ‘t be satisfied with a great gaming experience like Grand Theft Auto IV when it’s a multi-platform game and comparisons between a 360 and a PS3 version can be made. It’d go against the fanboy code of conduct and be an opportunity that’d be inexcusably wasted. So, this day we bring you a GTAIV comparison video that puts both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions head to head … erm, side by side. Pull out your magnifying glass, count each pixel and scrutinize the anti-aliasing, because there are comparisons to be made and a fanboy tradition to be upheld. For the most committed, watch the comparison video in full HD for a superior analysis.

Bizarre just sent word that they’ve finished their Spring website cleaning (thankfully, we kept tripping on the pile of boxes stacked up at the front door) and with it comes the ability to view leaderboards for Geometry Wars and Boom Boom Rocket on the web!

To get your on the web leaderboard search on, simply make your way to either the Geometry Wars leaderboard or Boom Boom Rocket leaderboard pages on Bizarre’s offiicial website and you’re in. Once there, you’ll be able to view leaderboards for each game and even search for own gamertag to see where you fit in the mix. You’ll also be able to fully understand how horrible you’re at video games and how sad your “high scores” really are. Personally, we think anyone who scored higher than us on Geometry Wars cheated. They’re all just a big group of cheaters ..

Earlier this month, High Moon Studios revealed that a punchy and limb breaking Bourne Conspiracy demo was planned for release to the XBLM sometime next month. Now, thanks to the magic of the internets and a what a few weeks time can bring, we have the ability to confirm via Eurogamer that the Bourne demo will be ready for download on Monday, Might 19th. Exciting stuff that would be even more exciting if the franchise’s main man Matt Damon was actually featured in the game … SNAP!

You may recall Gary Busey’s Saint’s Row 2 videos from earlier this month. They are, to state the least, insane. That is to state that Gary Busey is insane, but that’s okay. It works for him, makes him money. What we’re getting at here is that Uncle Gary is back with more Saints Row 2 videos, and he’s as crazy as ever. We know the purpose of these videos is to advertise Saints Row 2, but we just can’t get over Gary. Frankly, “People don’t like getting shot in the face” may be the ideal line we’ve ever heard. Find another video featuring Tulsa’s insane favorite son after the break.

The Team Fortress 2 Gold Rush update is now available for free download via Steam. The update includes the Gold Rush map with its own gameplay style dubbed Payload. Perhaps more important than the map, this update marks the first set of new achievements and unlockable weapons.

The first class to receive the update is the Medic, who can earn three new weapons — Blutsauger, Kritzkrieg and Ubersaw — obtained by earning 12, 24 or all 36 new medic accomplishments, respectively. All the new achievements, including a complete Medic icon set (PNG files) can be found at the Gold Rush site.

Update:
It’s also worth noting that this weekend, May 2 - 4, Steam users can play Team Fortress 2 for free. That includes the Gold Rush update. You can pre-load the game now.
