At Sony’s PlayStation Day, president Kaz Hirai admitted that the PS3 had a rough year last year. He also confessed that the competition was passing them up, and that the system’s software selection has been fairly weak. Wow, they do hear us!

“It’s fair to state that the first year of PlayStation 3 was somewhat a difficult one,” offered Hirai. “There were some teething problems, success from our competitors, and our customers were a tiny underwhelmed by the range of titles that were available.”

“This was something that we were very much aware of, and something that we were confident we could over come,” he said.

Of course, Kaz had to state something about the delays of their on the web service, Home. He states that he realizes that gamers were disappointed, and apologizes for this too!

“I realise this announcement was disappointing to many people, from TGS where we were aiming for a spring launch, so please accept my apologies for this delay.”

“But as I stated at Tokyo Game Show, I wouldn’t open up Home until I was totally happy with it, and I still stand by that statement.”

As Samit told us yesterday, Home is set for release later this year.

The new PS3 Siren game looks pants-crapping good, and this is one of the rare instances where I’ll refer to loss of bowel control as a compliment. For those of you hopefuls waiting to hear that this game will come to the US, your prayers have been recognized, if not yet answered — the game was confirmed for European release at Sony’s recent PlayStation day, and UK gamers can now download the trailer from their version of the PlayStation Store.

It also seems that Siren: New Translation is receiving a new title when in hits UK shores: Siren: Blood Curse. There’s no confirmation on a US release date yet, so we can’t say if this new title will carry over to the US if New Translation is released here, but the announcement of the UK release bodes well for survival horror-starved American gamers. For now, all we have the ability to do is rewatch the trailer and try to keep the drool off our own shirts.

The so-called “ultimate gaming combo” that is Sony’s Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle just got a tiny less ultimate for those of us stuck in the redheaded stepchild of the gaming market. For some retarded reason, only the US and Japan will be getting the DualShock 3 controller in their bundles, while Europe will be stuck with the SixAxis controller.

Sony revealed this after yesterday’s “gamers day” where it confirmed Europe would be getting the bundle, but without the full contents. I bet we’re expected to pay more though. ”Available from June 12 and priced at 439.99 Euros this offer is one of the most exciting bundles to date,” states Sony. Exciting, but still rather lame.

I can’t wait to get out of Europe.

We didn’t think hardcore ninja types had daddy issues but this latest clip of Ninja Gaiden 2 tells us otherwise. It showcases the ultra-ninja Genshin versus the father of Ninja Gaiden star Ryu Hayabusa. In the clip Ryu’s father Joe Hayabusa (seriously, his name is Joe) faces off against the ultimate bad-dude before Ryu walks in and screams out for his father’s safety, and probably because he never played catch with him as a kid.

After the jump you can check out another cutscene that features the werewolf boss, Volf (seriously who names these characters?). Surprisingly Volf reminds us of Kelsey Grammar’s portral of Beast in X-Men 3. Well-spoken werewolves FTW!

Two years since the last title in the series, and the closing of the development office responsible for the franchise, EA has announced plans to release Fight Night Round 4 sometime next year for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Few details on the new release exist besides the mention of a new physics and gameplay engine (will it bare the Freestyle brand too?). The most interesting addition to the series is the inclusion of former World Champion Mike Tyson, his first videogame appearance in over a decade. Insert ear-biting joke here.

If there’s one thing that this announcement trailer for Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant serves to highlight, it’s that there just aren’t that many platformers on the Xbox 360. Scratch that, there aren’t that many good platformers on the Xbox 360. We’re not saying that this new Crash will be good, mind you — Crash of the Titans didn’t exactly set the world on fire — but we welcome platformers when we can get ‘em. Mind Over Mutant looks to introduce new capabilities, new creatures to ride, and … um … other things we’re sure.

Eurogamer recently got their (lucky, lucky) hands on a preview build of (Game of the Year 2008) Ninja Gaiden II and the word is good. According to Eurogamer, complaints leveled at the original (bad camera, wonky save system, respawning enemies) have largely been addressed. Oh, and we should probably mention that the game is reportedly beautiful, with Eurogamer praising it for its “incredibly sharp textures, vivid and atmospheric backdrops, and frenetic, pinball-like action that barely flinches no matter what chaos is unfolding on the screen.” Perhaps most importantly for many gamers out there (not us, of course), the game now sports a much more forgiving difficulty curve as well as more selectable difficulty levels available from the begin.

For the love of all that is good, the wait is killing us. That demo had better get here soon. Hit the “read” link to check out Eurogamer’s full preview in the meantime.

Attempting to appeal to a more casual audience, Electronic Arts announced in a press release the introduction of a new sub-brand of EA Sports called Freestyle. Focusing on making sports titles more accessible to a wider range of gamers, the Freestyle brand logo will signify that a game includes simpler control schemes for casual players.

“The launch of EA Sports Freestyle is an exciting milestone in the evolution of the EA Sports brand,” stated Peter Moore, president of EA Sports. “EA Sports Freestyle will be a perfect complement to our core portfolio of games that our loyal fans are deeply passionate about, and will provide compelling opportunities for new audiences looking for a lighter gaming experience and an easier entry point into EA Sports.”

The first title to include the new Freestyle branding will be EA’s cartoon-mischief style boxer Facebreaker which releases on the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii later this year.

After a nearly four year hiatus, the Doom series is back. Id Software this day announced that Doom 4 has officially begun production and that the company is looking for new talent to produce the sequel. Said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, “Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth.” Right now that’s all we know. No platforms have been announced but, given the franchise’s history, we’d expect it to show up on the 360 in some form.

Those looking to scratch that Doom itch while we wait for more info may want to check out the new series of Doom 3 novels. The first in a planned trilogy, Worlds on Fire, is actually pretty decent (yeah, we were surprised too).
