The hilarious gents behind the fan-swarmed Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) have announced Ken Levine as the keynote speaker during the event that runs from August 29-31.
“Obviously, Ken is pimp supreme,” stated Penny Arcade’s Robert Khoo, “We’re super excited to have him open up the show.”
Levine, who has recently been iconized for his work on the critical and commercial smash-hit BioShock, will lead the charge at the event which also includes musical guests MC Frontalot, FreezePop, the MiniBosses, and Jonathan Coulton of ‘Still Alive‘ fame.
PAX also welcomes back the Omegathon, in which twenty randomly-selected PAX pre-registrants compete against each other in various gaming events ranging from table-top to the electronic games. Winner of the 2008 Omegathon will score a trip for two to the Tokyo Game Show, along with $5,000 in spending skrilla (that’s OG street for monies, btw) and a home theater system that’s described as “almost supernatural.”

Two key announcements have been made for fans of 2K Sports’ NHL franchise. First, and more importantly of course, Rick Nash has been tapped as the cover athlete of NHL 2K9. This coming from a memorable season for the Columbus Blue Jackets where they, you know didn’t make the playoffs. But that’s besides the point!
The second, and way less important, is developer Visual Concepts is “taking over” the development reigns of the game instead of working with Kush Games and promises to rebuild the game from the ground up. Surprising changes would be made due to the fact that 2K8 was one of the second best hockey game available according to Metacritic.
Some things you might want to take into account about this post. One, Rick Nash? Really? Two, building the title from the ground up? Thank goodness. Three, there were only two hockey games last year.
Oh, sorry to any Nash or Blue Jackets fans. I’m a Leafs fan, so what do I know?

Remember earlier in the month when we mentioned that the eleventh season of South Park on DVD would include three mystery Rock Band tracks? Well, the mystery has been solved and those songs are … nothing, nothing at all. Yes, it seems a studio spokesperson has confirmed the three-tracks were not happening after all and that retailers actually had incorrect information.
If we could speculate for a second as to why. Considering South Park had an entire episode dedicated to Guitar Hero and that the concept art for the eleventh season DVD set shows Stan and Kyle rocking out to Guitar Hero-style controllers it’s possible that the tracks were never intended for Rock Band but for … you guessed it, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. But why would a retail insider say Rock Band? Well, for the same reason your mom calls all your videogames Nintendo. They just don’t know the difference.
The studio spokesperson did state new details on the set are coming soon, so stay tuned.
[Thanks, Will B.]

It’s a one-of-a-kind European edition of Rock Band DLC Friday today as our friends overseas will soon be experiencing all that Rock Band has to offer (and an high-priced offer at that). So, Harmonix being the cool cats they’re, has decided to offer up the tracks that were previously exclusive to Europe’s edition of Rock Band. Without further wait, check the break for a complete list of all nine European songs that’ll hit the XBLM next Tuesday, Might 20th for 160 Microsoft points each. And yes, there will be Muse and Wes Wampas. Be happy.

Hopefully, people have been brushing up on their non-English. This week’s Rock Band Weekly brings us the songs packaged with the European release of Rock Band. We’ve known for a while these tracks were coming as DLC, and Harmonix has seen fit to do it the week of Rock Band’s European release. Also, all DLC available in North America should be available in Europe beginning Might 20.

- “Hier Kommt Alex” - Die Toten Hosen (160 MS Points / $2)
- “Countdown to Insanity” - H-BlockX (160 MS Points / $2)
- “Perfekte Welle” - Juli (160 MS Points / $2)
- “Manu Chao” - Les Wampas (160 MS Points / $2)
- “Hysteria” - Muse (160 MS Points / $2)
- “Rock N Roll Star” - Oasis (160 MS Points / $2)
- “New Wave” - Pleymo (160 MS Points / $2)

Le sigh, videos for all of next week’s tracks can be found after the break. The DLC will be available next Tuesday and Thursday for Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively.

The general consensus seems to be that Grand Theft Auto IV won’t stop being fun or grow old anytime soon. There’s a seemingly endless amount of things you can do in not only the single-player portion of the game, but in the multiplayer modes too, which is why we’ll be playing it tonight for hours on end.
Whether you’re trying to beat a co-op mission or getting a group of people together in free mode to fly helicopters high above Liberty City’s tallest skyscrapers, only to jump out and attempt to land on civilians, there’s a tremendous amount of fun to be had.
As always, hit the comments to tell us what you’ll be playing tonight, as well as any games you’d like to host for Friday Night Fights.

A couple of weeks ago, X-Play got an exclusive look at the Duel Mode in the Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It seemed like a ton of fun, and I figured that while it wouldn’t be as awesome to swing around a lightsaber with two analog sticks, it’d still be plenty satisfying. Unfortunately, LucasArts has announced that the HD current-gen (yeah, I stated it) versions of the game — i.e., the PS3 and 360 versions — won’t have any multiplayer component.
According to a LucasArts spokesman, the “reason” for the lack of a multiplayer mode on the PS3 and 360 is … because one exists in the Wii, PSP, and DS versions (it’s Wi-Fi on the handhelds, of course). Wait…WHAT? Apparently, they believe that it’s superior to give no explanation at all than to try and give even a bullsh*t PR answer. Frankly, I just find that infuriating, but you be the judge:
To be specific, there’s no multiplayer in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, because there’s on the Wii, PSP, and DS. As far as specific reasons are concerned, we don’t really like to get into the reasons why we don’t do things because I don’t think there’s really a satisfactory answer that people would really be happy with. So, there isn’t multiplayer and that’s kind of how it is…
I’m just waiting for the next edition of Webster’s Dictionary to feature this statement as a definition of the word “lame”. Hell, I would’ve been happy if he’d stated something like, “We were originally working on a PS3/360 multiplayer mode, but had to scrap those plans due to time constraints.” But as it stands, we’ve got nothing; instead, we’ll have to pick up the Wii/DS/PSP versions or forever lament the inability to recreate the Obi-Wan/Vader fight from Revenge of the Sith.

As promised, Sony delivers two new characters for Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds in this week’s PlayStation Network update. I’m happy to report that neither one of these characters say or do stupid things like many of the other ones do. Unfortunately I’m still spending just as much time in the bunkers. Gloria and Alex were still worth the $.99 a piece that I paid for them.
Other add-on content for this week includes a 27mb download of Rocketmen: It Came From Uranus! and Rock Band songs from Blondie, The Clash, and Sonic Youth. American Idol Encore also gives 21 song tracks to downloaders.
I don’t know if you’re a Dragonball person or not, but the Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit Demo (477mb) is worth checking out. There’s also a demo for Codemasters’ action RPG Overlord Raising Hell (857mb). Don’t miss the PSP demo for Secret Agent Clank.
There’s not many videos this week. One of the most impressive, anime fan or not, is

Yesterday we brought word that yes, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is in preproduction and waiting for a green light from Ubisoft. The French magazine in which creator Michael Ancel was interviewed also brings to light the game’s intended platform — the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Remember, this game still hasn’t been officially approved by Ubisoft, so we don’t know if it will ever definitely reach those platforms yet. Now that the gaming public knows a sequel is being drafted, however, I wouldn’t like to be the Ubisoft rep that has to tell them it’s not happening if things went that way. One only hopes that the threat of nerdy assassination prompts Ubi into making the right decision.
I really hope this comes to pass. Having the world of Hillys brought to life with the power of modern consoles is something I want to happen before I die.

Remember children, EA’s $25.74 per share deadline offer for Take-Two ends tonight at 11:59PM EDT. Originally offering $26 per share and a purchase price of $2 billion, EA had lowered its offer when Take-Two declined to sell in April. Currently trading closer to $27 a share, Take-Two Interactive has been in EA’s sights for quite some time–so does anyone think this deadline will stop them from trying again?
EA states they want Take-Two, so are they really going to give up? What else could they do? Well, EA could always lower their offer to Take-Two again, just to scare them. It’s like those old sitcoms where two people haggle over money and one gets progressively lower just to scare the other guy into submission. What we’re saying is that EA is basically the gaming equivalent of Balki Bartokomous.
Some analysts think this whole thing will be hammered out over the weekend, but we’ll have to wait and see.
