In a very ninja-like and surprising move, team Bungie decided to use this weekend’s MLG San Diego event to debut one of their work-in-progress Halo 3 multiplayer maps called Cold Storage.
Bungie’s own Lukems and Shishka unveiled the new map yesterday and let MLG San Diego attendees watch a few MLG Pros duke it out in the chilly new map. Of course, details are super duper scarce seeing that Bungie hasn’t formally announced Cold Storage outside of the MLG event, but we do know one major piece of info about the map. We know that Halo 3’s Cold Storage is a pretty strict remake of one of Halo: CE’s most popular close quarters maps Chill Out. Crazy huh? And to keep your new Halo 3 map salivaters salivating, you can jump over to MLG.com to view a few off-screen pictures of Cold Storage in all its awesomeness. Now we wait for more Bungie approved details …
[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

Just as Entertainment Weekly promised, Activision recently sent word that music from Coldplay, including a track from their latest album Viva la Vida, will be making its way to the XBLM as Guitar Hero III downloadable content next Thursday, June 19th. The Coldplay DLC pack will consist of three tracks including their latest single “Violet Hill”, their first ever hit “Yellow” and the single “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face”. Even though Acti didn’t make any mention of pricing, we anticipate you’ll be able to grab this three pack for the standard GHIII DLC going rate of 500 Microsoft points. Official press release posted after the break.

One of the greatest rivalries known to man has taken its battle to the U.S. Video Marketplace this week, where each group is fighting, kicking and clawing to the death for XBVM supremacy. We’re of course speaking about the legendary pirates versus ninjas rivalry where new XBVM release Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest will represent the pirates team and the classic (and free) rental Ninja Hunter will represent team ninja. Who will win? We aren’t sure, but whatever the outcome is we all should take comfort in knowing that ninjas are way cooler than those smelly pirates. Ninja kick or pirate peg leg kick towards the break for a complete list of this week’s new motion picture releases. High-yarrr!

Rewind time back to 1993. My ideal friend Alicia and I are in the full swing of our rebellious indie adolescence, wearing Doc Martens and striped stockings to school and ferociously consuming as much new music as our young brains could absorb without dripping from our ears. The two most oft-played CDs in our cars? The Pixies’ Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, of course.
It was helpful, of course, that we could scream such gems “He bought me a soda and tried to molest me in a parking lot” across the classroom at each other and earn confused stares from other people, but let’s face it: The Pixies kicked serious, insane amounts of ass. They still do, in fact, which is why Harmonix/MTV Games have smartly chosen Doolittle as the third full-length album to be sold as DLC for Rock Band, following such rock legends as The Vehicles and Judas Priest.

In last week’s story announcing that Coldplay is coming to Guitar Hero, I said that I had yet to purchase a single piece of Activision’s downloadable content offerings for Guitar Hero III. Well, it looks like they’ve finally put together a group of songs that I simply can’t resist purchasing, even though I’ll only be playing the guitar/bass parts as opposed to getting the full band experience.
Activision sent out a press release (see for yourself after the jump) today letting us know that “the reflective and emotional chords of multi-award winning band Coldplay” will be making their Guitar Hero series debut in the form of a three-song pack. As Entertainment Weekly told us last week, the first song is “Violet Hill,” the hit single from their new album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (it came out in limited release this week — as of today, it’s out in Japan, the UK, and Europe — but it won’t be out in Canada and the US until next Tuesday, June 17th).
The second and third songs are two of my all-time favorite Coldplay tunes. There’s the band’s first massive hit, “Yellow,” from 2000’s Parachutes; it’s a beautifully written love song. The last song is “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face,” off of 2002’s A Rush of Blood to the Head; it’s…also a beautifully written love song. Coldplay has got the “beautifully written love song” thing down pretty well.
In my view, since they’re going for guitar-heavy songs, they should’ve picked “Shiver,” which is a fantastic song and features a killer lead riff. But hey, they’ve done their job; I’m already willing to fork over my — wait a minute, there’s no mention of a price in the press release! I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that the pack will cost the usual $6.25 (500 MS Points). Then again, the surprise Mot

If you’ve been jonesing for some videogame tennis action, then jones no longer, my friend. Yesterday, 2K Sports sent out a press release (after the jump, as always) saying that Top Spin 3 has gone gold on all platforms. So whether you’re a proponent of the ten-year console life cycle (PS3), love to let loose on Live (360), like more control interactivity (Wii), or partake in on-the-go gaming (DS), you’ll be able to serve up some aces starting on Tuesday, June 24th.
This release date only applies to North America; the game has been out in Europe and Australia since May 23rd. Along with the press release, 2K Sports has provided 20 new screenshots: one from the 360 version; three from the PS3 featuring Rafael Nadal; six from the Wii version; and ten from the DS version.
If you want even more images, check here for some from the HD versions, and here for shots from the DS version. For more specifics on the game, hit up my developer game notes, where you can find another bunch of screens from the 360 version of the game. Finally, for a couple of photos of Maria Sharapova (just because), head here. Okay, I’m done whoring my prior posts now. Just as a heads-up, you can expect a Destructoid review of Top Spin 3 soon after the game’s North American release.
