It has been a wild week in WoW — first, we heard about patch 2.4.3, with level 30 mounts and big changes to the talents. Then, new loot cards for us to drool over. On Saturday, the Midsummer Fire Festival started, with new quests and a new boss to fight. And this week, we’re all puzzling over what Blizzard will announce at the Worldwide Invitational (and what “Icefield” means — it’s like Cloverfield, only colder). Huge stuff happening at WoW Insider! Here’s all the links you need to catch up.

Due to the worrying level of DRM included in the Computer version of Mass Effect, one can’t help but be nervous over the upcoming Maxis-developed game Spore, which is also being published by … *umphf* … What? That’s weird, I seem to have blacked out there for a few minutes. Hey, where’d this mysterious, shiny box on my desk come from? It appears to be a copy of Spore, but the packaging is noticeably different. I wonder what special secrets could be hidden in this edition of the game. Let’s crack it open and find out.

  • ‘Making of Spore‘ DVD video
  • ‘How to Build a Superior Being’ DVD video, by National Geographic Channel
  • ‘The Art of Spore‘ hardback mini-book
  • Fold-out Spore poster
  • Premium 100-page Galactic Handbook

While none of these items appear to be truly noteworthy, they’ve nonetheless distracted me from whatever negative line of thinking I was originally engaged in, along with camouflaging the additional $30 in the price tag.

Aside from getting the box, it also seems that at some point in the last five minutes I preordered five additional duplicates, purchased two more copies of the Spore Creature Creator, and designed seventeen new creatures to join the 1,000,000-plus on Sporepedia. For some reason I also have a business card from John Riccitiello in my pocket, along with some stitches in my head that weren’t there before. Hmmmmmm.

When I first heard word of a new Red Faction game, I wasn’t too excited. I totally adored the first Red Faction, but the second one destroyed my love for the series (plus, it doesn’t help that Red Faction 1 does not stand the test of time). After reading Nick Chester’s preview of Red Faction 3, I got excited, but I was still a tiny skeptical.

This new preview from IGN has me absolutely excited for the game now. The big changes to the series look so good: the third-person view, open-world exploration and real-life destruction physics have put the game on my radar. My only question now is whether I’ll still have the ability to just make endless tunnels to nowhere, like in the first game.

ENVIRONMENT DESIGN

In my last posting, I was quite surprised to see a number of people like more of the top-down view point than an isometric one. So we decided to adjust our game to reflect this preference. Now that the initial concept seems to be rolling along, I thought I’d open it up to some of you more artistic types here before I post up a help wanted ad at Gamasutra, and see if you’d like to help contribute your skills to draw some environments. If this catches your interest, then please email me at dr.boa(at)bluebottle.com. If you’re an up-and-coming artist who would like to see your work in a game, it’s a great way to get your feet wet! Depending on your level of involvement and expertise, we have the ability to speak compensation as well. Though keep in mind, we are indie, and dining on ramen noodles to get by. I at least promise it to be a fun ride! Oh yeah, please send samples of your artwork otherwise I really can’t tell what you can do. Just stating the obvious.

CHARACTER DESIGN

I realized that people were having lots of difficulty visualizing the game. I ran into the same problem early on when talking with potential investors (translate: friends and family!), and new team members. But once they saw the art style, they instantly got it. It made me wonder how difficult life must have been for George Lucas when he was trying to describe a one-eyed robot that looks like a trash can with a phallic head. Or a scary villian who dresses in an all-black costume that looks like the interior of a ‘72 Chevy, complete with vinyl-like fabrics, an 8-track stereo on his chest, and a phallic head. You really have to see it to believe it.

Feeling down because you weren’t selected to participate in Ubisoft’s closed beta of Tom Clancy’s EndWar? Well, pucker up soldier! Today Ubisoft has released more beta codes to gamers who have yet to hear back regarding the test, which ends on July 7. Still shrouded behind a curtain of NDA mystery, the RTS console title began initial on the internet testing of its multiple modes and three multiplayer maps on June 17 with a rumored 15,000 players. No word on whether Ubisoft plans to release a third wave of codes for the beta or if the NDA will lift prior to the end of the test. Tom Clancy’s EndWar is scheduled to release fall.

Demos are sort of a blended blessing. Each morning, we fire up the old Xbox, swiftly put out the fire, and then browse the Marketplace hoping to find something special. A good video is nice, but a demo is even superior … usually. You see, today’s demo is Don King Presents: Prizefighter. A few months ago, sure, we might have looked at the Prizefighter demo with some sense of excitement. Now, after some especially tepid reviews, we can barely muster even detached interest. Still, it’s not like you have any other choice if you’re looking for a new boxing game. At the very least, it could save you from making a costly mistake, right?

Beginning at 11AM Eastern (9AM Pacific) the PlayStation Network will be down for six hours due to routine scheduled maintenance. We’ve confirmed with Sony that this is not the PS3 v2.4 update, which will add in-game XMB and trophies.

During the maintenance there will be no access to the PlayStation Store or online play through the PSN. Those who had online plans, feel free to take the opportunity to catch up on your Joystiq reading, we’ve got plenty of features to burn six hours on.
