With player created music tracks playing a pivotal role in Guitar Hero: World Tour, many might be wondering whether or not Rock Band 2 will also be incorporating such a feature. The answer, sadly, is no. In an interview with the Associated Press (the same interview that confirmed RB2 would have more than 80 tracks), Harmonix head Alex Rigopulos made it known that Rock Band 2 will not have any sort of player controlled track creation. Rigopulos noted that Harmonix wants to “do it right” when it comes to player created music. “We’re taking a radically different approach to that problem. It’s something we wanted to take more time to do it right. It’s actually something we’re not focused on in Rock Band 2,” stated Rigopulos, adding, “We’re really focused on other areas related to the music and bringing the community together.”
So, no create-a-track and community togetherness. You know what would really bring the community together? Online Band World Tour mode. Consider it.

Todd McFarlane isn’t sitting on his haunches, oh no. That just isn’t how you create an action figure empire, you have to go after licenses like a foamy mouthed dog full of rabies and rage. And that’s exactly what Toddy is doing, not only gobbling up the Guitar Hero license but now the Call of Duty: World at War franchise as well.
That’s right, this day Todd McFarlane and crew just announced they are creating a set of four Call of Duty :World at War action figures that are (presumably) set to release later this year for around $10-$15 each. Included in the four figure set are some “highly detailed” figures including “Marine Infantry, Battle of Peleliu”, “Marine Marine Corps with Flamethrower, Battle of Peleliu”, “Marine Corps with Machine Gun, Battle of Okinawa” and “British Special Ops, Battle for the Roer Triangle”. Overly long action figure names aside, we can’t help but wonder what other video game licenses McFarlane will acquire in the near future. Our vote is for Roogoo … we’d so support Roogoo figures.

Getting in a few jabs heading into E3, Sony’s PlayStation Network boss Eric Lempel decided to call out Microsoft on their Xbox Live Arcade de-listing antics and making fun of the Xbox 360 for its use of an inferior user interface.
“We definitely want to make sure that [the PlayStation Store] offers quality titles and games that our consumers are going to enjoy” Lempel told GamesIndustry.biz, saying that “depending on what type of UI you have you can accommodate a lot of titles.” Then, Lempel throws in a verbal left hook, saying that “over at the competitors’ UI they might have some issues just displaying content, and scrolling up and down lists isn’t the easiest way to find things.” Ouch. We’ll be the first to acknowledge the 360’s XBLM may not incorporate the ideal way to navigate content, but the PSN isn’t all peaches and creme either. Maybe Sony is just feeling the need to blow off some steam because, as we all know, releasing a 2.4 update can cause a lot of unwanted stress.

58 has been done before. 60 is too small of a jump. 70 is getting closer, but still isn’t awe inspiring. Now 80, 80 is a number that can be celebrated and a number that accurately describes the number of master tracks that’ll be included with Rock Band 2.
According to an AP interview with the CEO of Harmonix Alex Rigopulos, Rock Band 2 “will feature a playlist of over 80 songs — all master recordings” including more ” female-fronted bands and artists who have never contributed tunes to a music game.” Rigopulos also confirmed that in a few weeks during E3, they plan on announcing the entire setlist for the game of which a few tracks have already been leaked. It’s also interesting to hear that Harmonix plans on “broadening the musical genres of available downloadable content” for Rock Band, with MTV president Van Toffler mentioning that they plan to take the Rock Band platform and open it up to “the genres of music to country, hip-hop and R&B”. Not so “Rock” Band, but musically diverse … interesting.

Today, Rockstar Games announced that the release date for the latest addition in the Midnight Club franchise, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, has been pushed back from its initial September release. But don’t fret, it isn’t as bad as you think.
The new release date for Midnight Club: LA is October 7th for those in North American and October 10th for gamers in Europe. Not that big of a delay, but a delay no matter. Really, what’s another month of waiting? Be patient children.

Despite the fact that the newest of the Naruto games won’t be coming to the 360, that doesn’t mean that the franchise has left the console forever. According to several newly posted pages on a few different websites, we’ve got word of a new Naruto 360 project, apparently entitled Broken Bond. Supposedly set for release in November, Broken Bond deals with the rivalry between Naruto and the character Sasuke and is thought to be a continuation of the earlier 360 game Rise of the Ninja.

In an interview with GameDaily, GameTap’s VP of Content, Rick Sanchez, explains that rumors of the gaming-buffet’s death are “greatly exaggerated.” Although he avoids divulging whether GameTap is profitable, he does say that it is hitting parent company Turner Broadcasting’s P&L (profits and losses) figures, so apparently it’s still keeping daddy happy.
Although rumors of GameTap’s demise have pretty much been present since the service launched — something even Sanchez jokes about — things went into overdrive after the company laid off its all-star editorial team. GameDaily reports it heard rumors in the wake of the firings that the service would remain online only as a shell until December and then be buried. Sanchez “categorically denies” any of that, pointing to Grimm and more announcements expected in the future as proof of the service’s growth.

Like the rumbling of thunder in the distance, an unstoppable force is audibly and rapidly approaching us. Soon, a cacophony of clicks will ring through our ears, the reverberating result of posting an article which not only concerns Halo 3, but prominently features the word “free.” What have we done?
Bungie’s Luke Smith has announced via Bungie.net that “Cold Storage,” a chilly new multiplayer map for everybody’s favorite cyborg shoot-em-up, will be downloadable — for free — from the Xbox Live Marketplace beginning Monday Bungie Day, July 7. The map will be implemented in regular rotation in playlists that require the Legendary Map Pack, which will also drop from 800 MS Points ($10) to 600 MS Points ($7.50) on the same day. If you haven’t tried those environments out yet, now’s the time to join in on the gradual extermination of Earth’s population. %Gallery-26795%

As we slowly prepare for the long weekend here in the Says, hunkering down for some game playing with a grill right next to us, it’s probably worth mentioning that GameTap’s selection of free games (which we’ve listed after the break) won’t cost you a dime or, more importantly, gas money getting to the mall. All that cash can be spent on some extra meat for the barbecue. But first, let’s look at the new subscription games this week.
- Descent: Freespace (Windows) - If you liked Wing Commander: Prophecy and miss that whole space pilot genre, definitely check out Freespace.
- Off-road Redneck Racing (Windows) - Oh boy, do we have to write something here? Umm, Rednecks go racing … it’s slightly less offensive than Redneck Rampage.
GameTap’s free games list doesn’t get any new additions this week, but if you haven’t played Tomb Raider: Legend or Deus Ex, what are you waiting for?
