joust

As if we didn’t already have enough ways to buy Joust, Midway has launched the “Midway Arcade,” which offers just as much quarter-pumping excitement as the name implies. The on the internet store — really, it’s just a store — features 14 ancients for purchase and download in preset bundles, along with, oddly enough, $5 Computer versions of select games from Midway’s TouchMaster compilation for DS. Midway’s also selling some of its contemporary efforts — in another location — for direct download to Personal computer, highlighted by titles like Unreal Tournament 3 and … what’s this? Midway Arcade Treasures! That’s right, today alone, we’ve got two new ways to own Joust. You know, just in case.

The full list of releases is posted after the break.

'supernatural powers' and alternate dimensions screenshot

A couple of days ago we ran an article that dealt with the possibility that the new Wolfenstein game would be exposed in the August issue of PC Gamer. Instead, it appears that the upcoming issue of Game Informer will have the real scoop on Wolfenstein for the Personal computer, Xbox 360, and PS3. Among the information scourged is the startling revelation that series’ protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz will possess “supernatural powers.”

Tiscali were the guys that got their hands on the latest issue and detailed some of the information that the article contains:

  • Set in World War II among Nazis experimenting with occult powers once again.
  • B.J. Blazkowicz making comeback, this time also having supernatural powers of his own.
  • Set in one large city, which will open itself up as you progress through given missions and quests.
  • Randomly generated content blocking your path at times.
  • AI controlled local resistance, assisting you in fight at times.
  • An substitute reality called ‘The Shroud’, some sort of a parallel dimension fueling Nazi powers.
  • Will be released ‘when it’s done’

Blazkowicz is going to have supernatural powers? I am nearly in tears from my excitement. One of the more interesting things talked about at GDC a billion years ago was that Wolfenstein was going to take place in a perpetual environment. It looks like id and Raven stayed on task with that. I wonder how this Grand Theft Auto take on Wolfenstein will factor into the Nazi-stomping action that the majority of us love? Furthermore, I hope B.J. can shoot PSI lasers out of his eyes. Please, id?

Schizoid edition screenshot

I can’t help but feel like many of you overlooked Schizoid, one of the most enjoyable co-op games to come out in current years.

Unlike an unnecessarily big amount of Xbox LIVE Arcade titles, Schizoid wasn’t released with a broken online mode, so I figured it’d be a good candidate for Friday Night Fights.

Participation should be much higher than last week seeing as how this day isn’t the Fourth of July, so if you’d rather play something else with your Dtoid pals, that shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Hit the jump for the hosts as always.

At GDC this year, Dale North, Nick Chester and I giggled like school girls when we were shown a super secret and surprisingly intergalactic sequel to the addictive Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords.

Honestly, this first trailer for Puzzle Quest: Galactrix doesn’t reveal much at all. It shows enough, though, to give you a swift taste of the all new gravity mechanic. As you play each stage, the traditional colored tiles will actually fall in different directions depending on where your “puzzle ship” is in space. It is a tricky (but cool) feature and is sure to add an enormous amount of challenge to an already stressful game.

It is also nice to see that the ridiculously overdramatic music is making a grand return. I always loved that about the original Puzzle Quest.

Puzzle Quest: Galactrix is set to hit the Nintendo DS, XBLA, and Computer in early 2009 (sorry PSP owners), but we are sure to see more of the game at next week’s E3.

The world of Warhammer just got a bit smaller. In an interview with with MMORPG.com, Mythic Entertainment VP and General Manager Mark Jacobs (not to be confused with fashion designer Marc Jacobs) has revealed some huge cuts for the Warhammer Online’s launch. Namely, the capital cities for the Dark Elf, High Elf, Orc, and Dwarf factions are gone. That leaves two capital cities, Altdorf and the Chaos Inevitable City.

Additionally, four classes have been cut: Choppa (Greenskin), Hammerer (Dwarf), Blackguard (Dark Elf) and Knight of the Blazing Sun (Empire). Jacobs explained the cuts were made for quality reasons and expressed dismay over having to nix the classes. Also, to seemingly curtail any conspiracy theories, he stated, “This has nothing to do with EA … they had zero input in this … They don’t even know about it. It’s not a discussion we would have with them.”

The MMO-obsessed at Massively have provided explanations for the ramifications of these cuts. No indication on if any of these features will return in an update or expansion pack.
