Based on their overt teasing, we’re willing to bet Bungie is announcing a new game tomorrow. An unverified tip to Joystiq stated that whatever game is announced Monday will be out this year. Assuming this isn’t Halo Recon Advanced Warfighter or Peter Jackson’s Halo project, one potential candidate for such a title with a short development time would be Xbox Live Arcade. A recent countdown rumored to be connected to Bungie (and once counting down to tomorrow) has changed to now end on August 7 just after 7:00 pm PT, although a WHOIS query of the site doesn’t add credence to the rumored connection.
Compounding the rumor is Bungie’s mysterious fixation with “The Superintendent.” Who’s the superintendent? We’re glad you asked. He’s the icon shown above who as far back as Might has been popping up on Bungie t-shirts, in their news posts and forums and in the recent Bungie Day gamerpics pack as the unacknowledged eighth gamerpic. So are we barking up the wrong tree? We’ll find out for sure tomorrow.

Ascaron’s first Sacred title yielded a solid experience as players navigated and slashed monsters on the continent of Ancaria. Sacred 2: Fallen Angel is a true sequel to the original, featuring the same Diablo-esque mechanics that fans love and a return to the world that spawned multiple expansions and fanfare. More importantly, the guys at Ascaron are more than happy to answer the call of its fans.
Sacred 2’s version of Ancaria is promised to be more than one and a half times more massive than the previous title, which is roughly over twenty-two square miles of distance to traverse.

You know, ever since Microsoft released DOOM in the middle of X06, we’ve become used to the idea that we should anticipate some killer games during huge events. Last year’s E3 gave us Golden Axe and Sonic the Hedgehog. During GDC this year, Microsoft released demos of XNA Community Games, including the highly anticipated XBLA release Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. Naturally, we were really fired up to see what would happen during E3 next week. So, what are we getting? Coffeetime Crosswords. Yes, SRSLY. Other than that, there will be free Buku Sudoku DLC and Puzzle Quest is joining Arcade Hits at the reduced price of 800 MS Points (a 400 point cut).
Barring any surprises, it’s looking like the tradition has been broken.
Update: Looks like we might be getting another XBLA game after all.

Oh Coffeetime Crosswords you are a funny, funny game, but are certainly not the kind of release we want to see during the week of E3. Thankfully an email came that ended our apprehension. Having been flying under the radar a bit this year, Shred Nebula will actually be hitting the Live Arcade on July 16th. For the calender challenged that’s next Wednesday.
The top-down shooter may appear to be just another twin-stick game but it actually has roots in both Asteroids and, believe it or not, Street Fighter. With a concept like that, and the promise of large free-roaming space environments we’re willing to give Shred Nebula a good portion of our busy week next week.

This is a unique XBLA in Brief ladies and gentlemen. Why? Because this week we take a look at Schizoid, which has a unique achievement in it. The Sploderific achievement, you see, is named after a word coined by our own Dustin Burg! Does that make us biased towards the game? Maybe, but it doesn’t injured that it’s actually pretty good. Oh, we also take a look at Golf: Tee It Up!, which is a pretty decent game as well. Watch the latest episode and learn how you too can earn the badge of honor that’s the Sploderific accomplishment.

After sinking tens of dollars into research and development, our attempts to accelerate time and begin E3 early have failed. As we can’t force time to go faster — not for lack of trying — we’ll just have to settle with a few digital hors d’oeuvres to tide us over in the meantime. And, since Halo Wars is definitely one of the must play games on our list, why don’t we make those digital snacks some fresh, hot out of the capture station screenshots? We only have three new shots but, again, since we cannot change the irrevocable flow of time, they’ll have to do. Enjoy them in the gallery below.

We aren’t going to beat around any bushes with this edition of Video Marketplace Weekly. The new release pickings are so trim, they’re semi transparent and don’t actually warrant the use of the word “they”. “The” is a more appropriate term, because the only new release this week is Batman: Gotham Knight. Which, seeing that we’re in a very Batman say of mind, isn’t all that bad of a release. And in HD, who could go wrong? Hit the break to be not at all surprised by all the new video release (singular) you’ll be treated to.
