I think CD Projekt might just be my new best friend. Sure, the Polish-based publisher’s announcement of the awesome sounding downloadable game service, Good Old Games, might have influenced the feelings expressed in the previous sentence, but I’ve always liked them, honest!
GOG.com is an on-demand platform that will be stocked with classic Computer games. That, in and of itself, is great, but what about it is providing me with that extra oomph of excitement? Firstly, the games will be cheap: priced at either $5.99 or $9.99. Secondly, the games are all guaranteed to work perfectly with Windows XP and Vista (sorry, Mac users), can be downloaded an infinite number of times, and will come with cool extras. Thirdly, and here’s the huge one, every game will be totally DRM free. YES! Thank you, CD Projekt, for realizing that people don’t like copy protection in their legitimately purchased digital downloads.
“Our main goal is to create a user-friendly site with the ideal classic Personal computer games for a price that might be considered impossible to accomplish,” GOG.com managing director Adam Oldakowski stated. “The people behind GOG.com are gamers and we all know how difficult it is to find a lot of classic games. So we’ve started building a great games catalogue, gotten rid of the copy protection that gamers hate so much, optimized the games to work on modern operating systems, and made them cheap enough that piracy seems like a rip-off. It’s so simple to buy, download and install a game and then get deeply involved in the community; we’re very confident that gamers will absolutely love the site.”
So far, most of Good Old Game’s content is coming from Codemasters and Interplay, with titles like Fallout, Fallout 2, Freespace 2, MDK, Operation Flashpoint, and TOCA Race Driver 3 set to make an appearance when the service launches this September. Though if you can’t wait that long, there will be a shut beta starting in August that you can sign up for on the site.
CD Projekt has also revealed that one of their chief goals is to get all of LucasArts’ titles added to the service at some point. Why hello there, fans of classic adventure games. Can you see yourself buying a bunch of games you’d previously missed out on once Good Old Games launches?

We just got a chance to play one Xbox Live Arcade title that we knew about heading into E3 and the one XBLA game this blogger was most excited to get his hands on, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2. Bizarre Creations takes the ever enjoyable GeoWars formula and brings it into the multiplayer realm, ratches up the graphics and adds new game modes that’ll satisfy. Click towards the break to read our hands on impression of Bizarre’s geometry arcade shooter. W00tz!

This E3, not only did we receive megaton Xbox 360 software announcements, but we also received two megaton peripheral announcements too. Well, not exactly megaton in scale, but there are two brand new controller colors hitting retailers later this September.
High resolution photos of he red and blacked controller as well as the solid green wireless controllers (with matching battery packs) can be viewed in the gallery below. If you’re a Gears of War 2 fanboy, then we say go with the red / black controller. If you’re all about saving the Earth, then go green with the green controller. Then again, if you’re all about saving the planet we wouldn’t advocate purchasing a factory manufactured petroleum plastic based product. We’d feel dirty.

Somehow slipping through our extensive E3 2008 coverage (bad X3F, bad!) was an announcement that came during Microsoft’s conference informing us that NBC/Universal were just added to the U.S. Xbox Live Video Marketplace. This new partnership brings hit NBC, Sci-Fi Channel and USA Network shows to the XBVM including various SD/HD episodes from TV shows like The Office, Heroes, 30 Rock, Scrubs, SNL and more. This news may not be as exciting as the Netflix announcement, but we’re sure those diehard Heroes fans would probably beg to differ on that point.

Update: Fixed some grammar issues.
We’ll come out and say this: Valve’s Left 4 Dead impressed the hell out of us. We weren’t expecting its co-op focused gameplay to be so addictive, intense and so mind-blowingly zombie’riffic. From the game’s look to the presentation all the way through experiencing the affects of zombie vomit, we enjoyed our Left 4 Dead ride. Admittedly though, we should make it clear that we only received hands on time with the Personal computer version (mouse and keyboard FTL!), but were told that the 360 version will be nigh identical. Enough setup, let’s get to the impressions. Read on to get the Left 4 Dead impressions dish.

We have some footage showing off Bioware’s newest fantasy role-playing game, Dragon Age: Origins, after the jump. The game is being lauded as the spiritual successor to Baulder’s Gate, which is certainly one way to set some high expectations.
Dragon Age is looking good so far, but also doesn’t seem to particularly stand out. That’ll probably change once we see and hear some more about it, though. It is being developed by Bioware, after all.
Just as an aside, but one thing I found interesting was how Bioware president Dr. Greg Zeschuk stated that they were trying to get away from Dungeons and Dragons (and yes, I know he was talking about the game not being set in Abeir-Toril) yet, what they show of the tactical, frequently-paused for planning combat, makes it appear to be incredibly close to a standard pen and paper D&D encounter. Heck, Dragon Age even has a four person party, which is the recommended size for a D&D celebration.
I may not exactly be on the hype train right now, but I’m sure I’ll end up getting more and more excited for the game as time goes on. Dragon Age: Origin isn’t coming out until sometime in 2009, so Bioware still has plenty of time to woo me with the game’s (hopefully) exciting features. How do you feel about it so far? Do you think Bioware has another guaranteed hit on their hands, or is the (apparently) generic fantasy setting not really grabbing you?

Decorating a Sims home is so totally superior than creating monsters in Spore. Just ask Computer gaming consumers. According to gamesindustry.biz the NPDs for the week ending on July 5 show that the mighty Spore Creature Creator has been toppled from first by the Sims 2 IKEA expansion. Apparently players don’t have to go through the rigors of assembling the furniture like I have to. The sales list is as follows:
- The Sims 2 IKEA Home Stuff Expansion Pack
- Diablo Battle Chest
- Spore Creature Creator
- The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
- World of Warcraft: Battle Chest
- World of Warcraft
- Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures
- World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Expansion Pack
- The Sims 2 Free Time Expansion Pack
- Warcraft III Battle Chest
Look at all that EA and Activision/Blizzard/Vivendi action going on. Will World of Warcraft ever slide all the way down the list? Each week, I look at these numbers and wonder if the billion-year-old game could ever possibly be replaced. I’d almost bet that the only way people quit buying World of Warcraft is if they’re too busy buying Diablo III or Starcraft II.
