On a Thursday night after all the E3 shenanigans (and during our celebration, no less), we’ve word that Blizzard has begun the Wrath of the Lich King beta. Sources have told WoW Insider that the alpha phase reportedly shut down a few days ago and that invites should be going out soon for the beta. Additionally, a Blizzard site has gone live to help gamers get the beta set up. Are you one of the lucky few to get an invite? You can check out the patch notes here.

Insomniac carved out its fourth “C” behind closed doors at E3 this week: Community. (Can you name the other three?) Bungie has put the pressure on other FPS developers to serve their dedicated player base, and Insomniac hopes to respond by relaunching myresistance.net alongside Resistance 2 this fall.
We were shown some concept slides of the new site design, beginning with a landing page with links to three distinct experiences. To the left was an entryway into the community pages, in the center was “game info,” and to the right was “chronicles” (a section of the site that ties the franchise together with content like a timeline system). The landing page will be customizable to some extent. We saw a mock “ticker,” which could run along the top of the page displaying various Resistance related feeds (news, developer updates, friends activity, etc.). But what happens when we jump into the community portal?

This is an awesome stunt, somehow these people have organized an entire dorm of people to create a game of snake on the outside of the building.

In case you haven’t heard yet, you can’t lose in Wii Music. Sure, you can bob your head around and make notes higher or lower, but there are no real constraints to the game. Recently, it came to Joystiq’s attention that there is a new mode in Rock Band 2 called “No Fail Mode.” As the subtitle plainly recommends, there is no way to fail out of a song while utilizing the mode. Sounds like Wii Music, doesn’t it?
From personal experience, I think this mode is a bit ingenious. Like Jim, I’ll never be able to get over the fact that a game like Wii Music will exist, but not being able to lose in a mode for Rock Band seems like a good fit. I’ve been to a couple of celebrations with older, unhip adults scrambling to understand the fine art of holding a plastic guitar. After finally getting the strap appropriately around the shoulder, playing the game is a near impossibility. While, I, the trendy one in the room can master the medium difficulty, there’s no chance someone who hasn’t seen a console since the Atari is going to be able to get through a single song.
Perhaps it’s all about accessibility. What state you, Destructoid community? Is this mode a good idea? Do you think it will help launch Rock Band 2 even further into the stratosphere when it hits?

Would it not be awesome to be rewarded for your endeavors with shiny things on the PSP platform as well? This might soon be a possibility. Gamespot recently sat down for a presentation of Buzz! Master Quiz for the PSP, where producer Emerson Escobar might have accidently unveiled a cross-platform Trophy system.
We’ve also implemented a trophy system. Let’s state you answer a question within one second, you get a lightning finger trophy. If you answer a question within half a second, you get a supersonic trophy.
Escobar was unwilling to elaborate if the PSP was actually getting trophy support. The trophies in Buzz! might only be in the context of the game itself, which isn’t exactly unheard of. Notice how he says “a trophy system” as opposed to “the Trophy system.” Regardless, PSP Trophy support is certainly a very interesting proposition. It would probably require Sony to open up the entire network for Trophies. Envision playing a downloadable PS1 title for points. That’s certainly an area that Microsoft won’t touch with its Xbox Originals platform.

Blizzard has unveiled an achievement system — much like Steam, Xbox Live, Trophies, etc. — for World of Warcraft. The categories of accomplishments include PvP, PvE, world exploration, professions, and character development. Some are easy (give 10 hugs), some are very difficult (completing high-level raids). Additionally, there are “Feats of Strength,” very difficult or now-impossible achievements that don’t show up if unearned. The Feats are worth no points. No word on if the accomplishment points are worth anything.

It’s the survival horror game that really hasn’t been able to garner too much attention this year, but after getting a opportunity to play it at EA’s booth during E3, we’re more confident than ever that the buzz machine surrounding the title will be kicking in pretty soon. We’re of course speaking about Dead Space, EA’s twisted sci-fi horror game that isn’t only beautiful artistically, but also offers equally stunning gameplay and innovative gameplay elements to match. At Activision’s non-E3 conference Tuesday, Guitar Hero director Brian Bright surprised attendees confirming that any guitar and drum controllers players own for other games on the Xbox 360 will be compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour.
This news comes as quite a shock considering the current say of controller compatibility between the two music franchises — a recent update apparently made all guitar controllers compatible with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith but we’ve heard of some issues.
You might be asking yourself how the drums will work, considering Guitar Hero: World Tour drums use five-inputs while Rock Band uses four (see center of image above). According to Wired, Activision promises that using the Rock Band drums will cause the game to adjust the title to four inputs only. Now we wonder, will plugging in the Rock Revolution controller bring the input count to seven?

Some guy over at Joystiq named Richard Mitchell, swear that name sounds familiar, was able to finagle some details from Ensemble Studios during a demo of the game. Ensemble confirmed that the evil Covenant will be playable in Halo Wars. The only catch is that the Covenant won’t have a campaign mode and the option to play as them is in multiplayer only. Now, if they would just confirm the Flood already — we could I go home! Halo Wars is set to release sometime during the Spring of 2009. Looking for more information?
