First it was Quake Zero, then it became Quake Live, and now we have a fresh new look at Quake Arena, id’s free-to-play, browser-based iteration of Quake III Arena. As you’d expect, the visuals are decidedly simple, but still stylish nonetheless. We noticed a few instances of gameshow-like billboards peppered throughout levels; while they simply read “Quake Live” in the video, it’s likely these are placeholders for in-game advertising.

The trailer beckons viewers to QuakeLive.com for more info, but the site is still serving the sole purpose of a gateway for beta signups. From what’s shown in the footage, it will eventually become a very robust matching and ranking component of the game. With QuakeCon kicking off in just a couple of weeks we anticipate to find out more details soon.

Valve’s Doug Lombardi just shot us an email containing the final box art for … wait, what was it again? Something about “Left” and “Dead.” Ah, that’s right! It’s Left 4 Dead. Thanks, Mangled Hand! What would we have done without you? It’s a shame you won’t be able to grace the cover of the sequel, though. Perhaps your brother could … unless he’s let all that money he got from the Dead Space cover shoot go to his head thumb.

Gene expansion can be a tricky undertaking, as Konami learned this past Thursday when the first premium Metal Gear On the web expansion pack was released and promptly generated a host of service issues. Actually, in Konami’s words: “major system related problems” (and we’re not just talkin’ convoluted access this time). In fact, so damaging has the upgrade been that it takes a 37-entry timeline just to brief us on the drama leading up to the finished refund on Saturday. For those wondering about the “foreseeable future,” here are the most current updates:

  • MGO Shop - “At 18:00 on July 19th 2008, there are still no permanent solutions as yet. IP restrictions still stand, but it is planned that a different will be used and we expect the waiting times for buys to be improved as a result.”
  • Reward Shop - “At 18:00 on July 19th 2008, there are currently no set time schedules on its re-opening. We will make further announcements on this site should the situation change in any way, so please keep checking the site for further updates.”

“We would like to take this chance to express our sincere apologies for the problems that have affected all our customers that have been with us since the begin of the ‘Premiere Beta,’” Konami writes, concluding, “We are currently doing all in our powers to bring a permanent solution to the ongoing problems in the quickest possible time.” In the meantime, we advocate you play through the single-player campaign … again!

Raising Hell screenshot

A fantasy world without an overly huge, stereotypical demon villain would be far too nice, pretty, and sweet. According to Overlord: Raising Hell, fantasy realms need more evil. In fact, the want is so great that the game flips the typical demon antagonist into the main protagonist. The playful mix of satire, commentary, and terrible accents resulting from the flip is enough to delight even the most pragmatic gamer.

Yet, peel back the skin of the nefarious protagonist and charming little minions and what you’re left holding is a blended bag. While Overlord is a decent romp through a series of missions aimed to make you laugh, think and fill the world with evil, there are also some particularly glaring flaws. These flaws on the PS3 platform are real deal breakers, and unfortunate considering the promise of Overlord: Raising Hell.

Hit the break for the full review.

Get paid for creating LittleBigPlanet content screenshot

Typically, the only rewards that a player reaps when creating unique game content is the enjoyment that others have with it. According to comments given to PS3Fanboy by SCEE president David Reeves, this is about to change with the coming of LittleBigPlanet. Reeves envisions that users will be able to charge for their content created in LBP.

What we’re trying to do with LittleBigPlanet is almost iTunes meets eBay in the sense that once an individual or a developer has qualified by producing certain levels or certain add-ons, they’ll then be able in the future to exchange these and make money out of them Eventually, it’s feasible that you might well see the first LittleBigPlanet millionaire!

Reeves then goes on to stipulate that content creators may be able to set their own price for content. This sounds great in theory, but I wonder how far the rabbit hole will go. Will any of you be willing to pay for user-created LittleBigPlanet content?

Buy both consoles, 'stack them' screenshot

If you’re wondering what happened to Sony’s initial promise of full PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility in the PlayStation 3, the answers is simple: money. Talking with a small room of journalists at last week’s E3, SCEA’s President and CEO Tretton explained that the tough decision came down to production cost and hardware priorities.

Quake Live trailer shows off some Quake-like action screenshot

Here’s a little something we missed during the hectic week that was E3; a trailer for id Software’s upcoming browser-based first-person shooter, Quake Live, viewable after the jump. Promising exciting features like “non-stop action” and being accessible on “one website” certainly got me all hot and bothered, but you’ll probably be more interested in the fact that the game will be free.

It won’t really be free, though, as there will be plenty of ads plastered around the 30 plus arenas. The ads will be supplied by the folks over at IGA Worldwide, so we can anticipate to see in-game billboards featuring products and services from Burger King, Red Bull, and Hawaiian Airlines. I guess they could help to keep you entertained while you’re carrying a captured enemy flag back to your base or momentarily distract an opponent from finishing you off, thereby giving you the perfect opening to shoot him in the face with a rocket launcher.

If you want to get in on Quake Live’s beta test (which is going on right now) head on over to the official site and sign up. Does this look like something you might waste time on while at work?

[Thanks, Joe]

Normally we don’t do stories simply on box art. But when Valve sent this finalized Left 4 Dead box art over to us a few minutes ago, the internal response from the Destructoid staff was unanimous: “DO WANT.”

The art has a clean and simple design, which I think gets the point across nicely. There’s the game’s logo, which has a “4″ splashed in blood. And then there’s the hand, which uh … oh s**t, is it missing a finger!? Do you think zombies got to it? Oh my God, holy crap … do you think zombies are coming!?!? *squeal*

Check out my brief hands-on impressions of a Left 4 Dead cooperative session, and prepare yourself for survival on November 4 when the games ships for Xbox 360 and Computer.
