Harmonix announced its tracks for next week’s Rock Band DLC and it’s a slathering of metal. Yes, we’re sure there’s a superior way to describe these bands than just saying “metal.” Substitute metal? Post-modern substitute metal? Thrash pre-philosophy metal? Alternative existential rock? We can’t keep track of sub-genres anymore.

Individual songs (160 MS points/ $2)

  • “They Say” - Scars on Broadway (160 MS points/ $2)
  • “This is it” - Staind (160 MS points/ $2)
  • “Electric Crown” - Testament (160 MS points/ $2)
  • “Yomp” - The New No 2 (80 MS points/ $1)

Check out videos for these songs after the break. The tracks will be available for download next Tuesday and Thursday for Xbox 360 and PS3, respectively.

Just in case you somehow forgot, even then we told you to mark it on your calendar and circle it twice, there’s a Gears of War 2 After Hours event going on tonight at 9:30PM held at Gamestop stores nationwide. True, we’ve already been given the distinct honor of viewing the exclusive video clip prior to its official airing tonight, but there’s also some Gears of War tournament goodness going down too. You could win a t-shirt or some Microsoft points and maybe even mingle with some fellow Gearheads. It’ll be fun, we plomise. Heck, we’ll even commit to attending an After Hours event in central Minnesota. We’re cool enough to attend … are you?

There’s a new trailer out for the Namco brawler Afro Samurai and, to be honest, it looks pretty hot. The trailer introduces gamers to many of the series’ main characters, all of whom will apparently be voiced by the original voice actors for the TV show, which means we’ll be treated to the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Perlman. The gameplay shown in the video certainly looks intriguing, featuring some very cool looking maneuvers, but it remains unclear exactly how much control the player will have over everything. At any rate, Afro Samurai has piqued our interest.

In other game delay news, Midway just announced that Wheelman, a game based on the Vin Diesel motion picture by the same name, will not make its originally planned Fall release and will instead be pushed back into the first quarter of 2009. Still plenty of time for the 2009 release of the flick and still plenty of time to make the game fun and enjoyable. Oh yeah, we went there …

After getting a chance to touch Southpeak’s FPS gone RTS gone FPSRTS Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger during E3 (that title, wowzaz), we were informed that the game would have completely no Xbox Live support whatsoever. A metaphorical death kiss to any new franchise trying to make a name for itself. But now we know that the information was incorrect. We just confirmed with Southpeak that Raven Squad will in fact have Xbox Live co-op support, but no other multiplayer modes beyond that. So, that means no co-op locally and no versus locally or over Xbox Live. Just co-op FPSRTS gaming over Live which, admittedly, is superior than no support at all. Right?

Variety reports that Legendary Photos has signed on to co-finance and co-produce the upcoming Gears of War film adaptation. This comes in the wake of Legendary financing another film based on a tiny game called World of Warcraft. Legendary also recently had its hand in The Dark Knight, which is currently tearing up the box office. Epic guru Mark Rein said of the deal, “Legendary’s appetite for the synthesis of gaming, film and pop culture meshes perfectly with our own.” Well, that’s good. We all like it when appetites for synthesis mesh.

In what will go down as the earliest posting of a Bungie Weekly Update in history, team Bungie has pulled back a tiny corner of the veil that new Halo 3 multiplayer map in development Purple Reign is under. No, we don’t get any screenshot love, we get more of an artsy, freehand computer drawing of the map colored purple using Photoshop. But you get the idea. And even if you don’t get the idea, maybe PAX will bring more Purple Reign goodness. Spec!

Also, with the new Purple Reign drawing comes confirmation that, next week, Bungie will be revealing specifics regarding Halo 3’s second title update. How happy we’re to hear that the BR won’t be affected.
