Big Gears of War 2 news coming out of San Diego’s Comic-Con. Gears 2 is going to utilize linked accomplishments! Huzzah! Oh, you don’t know what link achievements are? Quite understandable. Utilizing linked accomplishments means a game recognizes previously earned achievements from another game and unlocks new content based on their unlocked status. In Gears of War 2’s case, it’ll be looking at which Gears of War accomplishments you’ve already unlocked and, in turn, unlock Gears 2 goodies. Which Gears achievements will unlock what content in Gears 2? Not all are known quite yet, but thus far we’re aware that:

  • Unlocking the “Completed Act 1″ achievement in GoW unlocks Anthony Carmine in GoW2 multiplayer.
  • Unlocking the “A Dish Ideal Served Cold” achievement in GoW unlocks General RAAM in GoW2 multiplayer.
  • Unlocking the “Time to Remember” achievement in GoW unlocks Minh Young Kim in GoW2 multiplayer.

We just can’t wait to see what our “Seriously …” accomplishment efforts unlock in Gears of War 2. Maybe an instant-win mode? That’d be sweet.

If you happen to peruse the recent Game Career guide e-newsletter (PDF file; via WarCry), you’ll notice on page 43 an advertisement that Cryptic Studios is hiring. While it may not seem like much, the ad does reveal a rather juicy detail that the developer is working on Star Trek Online.

In January 2008, work on the Star Trek MMO switched from Perpetual Entertainment to an undisclosed California-based developer. It looks like they’re sticking with the Star Trek Online name; we were so hoping to see City of Trekkies instead.

We already knew Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning was pretty much done, but now the Electronic Arts website has updated with a release date. The day of reckoning? September 23. There’s been no official press release from EA or developer Mythic, so someone has either jumped the gun on updating the site or this won’t be the official launch. In the meantime, check out Massively’s extensive WAR coverage.

During a panel at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner has revealed that a new version of his hit Apple II title, Karateka, is in the works.

The original game featured groundbreaking animation, and put players in the gi of a karate master trying to rescue a princess from the deadly clutches of Akuma (no Street Fighter relation). Players had an attack selection of three punches and three kicks, each which could be delivered at different heights; this was also groundbreaking at the time. At one point, the player was forced to battle an eagle using hand-to-hand combat, which will always and forever be considered bleeding edge.

“I can safely state it’s not going to be in the way you anticipate,” Mechner stated of the game’s return.

Well, if it’s a kart racer or first-person brawler, that damned eagle superior make its return or no sale.

Sex with 'repercussions' in Alpha Protocol screenshot

The tactical-espionage RPG by Obsidian will feature a tiny beyond just easy intrigue. According to senior producer Ryan Rucinski in a MTVMultiplayer interview, Alpha Protocol will feature sex. In fact, there will be a lot of sex. Rucinski confirmed “a lot of love interests,” and the capability to bed all of them over the course of the game if you’re suave enough. In fact, you’ll have to be both suave and cautious with the ladies you desire.

It all depends on how you treat them. If you’ve a strong relationship with female characters, they may help with missions…One may ask you to assassinate a high-level person. Maybe that’s not something you want to do, but she’s really hot. But there are obvious repercussions.

The scenes will be reminiscent of Mass Effect’s treatment of the matter, which translates to a lot of side-boob action. There are also going to be Accomplishments available if your prowess is especially awesome or terrible enough to warrant such a thing. I wonder if you can get an Achievement just for only going after the especially crazy chicks?

Community member covah posted a C Blog yesterday that contained screens of Darth Vader and Yoda together in Soulcalibur IV on the Xbox 360. I instantly thought it was just a Photoshop and moved right along not putting much thought into it.

Well, as it turns out, the screens may be legit. Anyone can do a Photoshop, but it’s pretty hard to fake a video. As you can see in the above video, (or, if you’re still skeptical, you can download the HD version of this video here) that is indeed Yoda and Darth Vader fighting each other in Soulcalibur IV. Namco has stated in the past that Vader and Yoda could come out onto the Xbox 360 and PS3 as DLC and it looks care about it might actually happen.

During the long, extensive and detailed Q&A session at the Comic-Con Halo Wars panel, details about a certain Floody race were awkwardly hinted at. After asked whether or not the Flood would be included in Halo Wars, the entire panel (made up of all sorts of Halo developers, writers and figure creators) went silent, looked uncomfortable and finally gave the pseudo answer “it is a complete Halo game.” Confirmation that the Flood will appear in Halo Wars? No, not at all. Confirmation that mention of the Flood being included in Halo Wars makes the dev team feel uneasy? Definitely!

Once thought to be the only good, pure and white edition of SoulCalibur IV may eventually be tainted with DLC from the dark side. Rumor on the internets is that NAMCO’s Xbox 360 edition of SoulCalibur IV, which exclusively includes Yoda and a white color scheme, may eventually get the PS3 exclusive Darth Vader fighter as a content download. Proof is in the in-game video pudding and, as you can see above, we’ve proof that both Yoda AND Darth Vader can battle it out in on the same Xbox 360. If true, are you willing to pay for a DLC Darth Vadar or do you demand your Vadar to be free content?

Rise of the Argonauts video demonstrates meaningful choices screenshot

Whenever I think of choices in RPGs, my hope is that the choice will be between stabbing a monster in the eye or slicing its head absolutely off. Judging from the footage, it looks like that might actually be a real choice. But, the video that Codemasters released recently is not exactly about stabbing things. Instead, it’s about the meaningful choices that players will make throughout Jason’s journey in Rise of the Argonauts.

The choices that can be made in the game are never exactly easy. As lead writer Rico Sablan points out in the video, every action and choice will have an impact. It could be as simple as choosing which patron god you want to favor or the ramifications of being a jerk to villains or NPCs. Some choices players will make may even dramatically change the narrative of the game.

Honestly, I’m really excited about this game. It looks care about it could really bust up the stagnant RPG mold spectacularly. Although, my real question is, at this point, what in the hell do Jason and his friends eat on a daily basis? There’s no way phyllo dough, feta, and lamb could give a person a pair of quadriceps like that. Maybe instead of the gym, I need to begin plowing fields with flamethrower-oxen or something.

Hit the break for the video and find out what the choices in Rise of the Argonauts are all about.
