When Microsoft recently flipped the switch to turn Games For Windows Live into a free-for-all, several cross-platform multiplayer games apparently brought their Xbox 360 denizens with them. That’s right, all three cross-platform titles (Shadowrun, Universe at War: Earth Assault and Lost Planet: Colonies) can be played online by any Xbox 360 user with a high-speed world wide web connection — freeloading Xbox Live Silver account holders specifically — according to a thread on Xbox Forums. Of course, the catch is you’ve got to have a copy of one of the participating game discs. So when Joystiq went to verify the reports, we realized our chest-o-games only contained the good ones. Any far less snobby readers care to shout out a “yea” or “nay” on the matter? (Update: X3F’s Xav de Matos has confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Lost Planet: Colonies can be played on the internet using a Silver account.)
In the interim, we’ve contacted Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, who told us we can anticipate Microsoft to issue an official statement shortly.
[Update 7:10pm: And we’ve heard back from a Microsoft rep who tells us, “Last week we announced that we were taking off the Gold-only restriction for multiplayer gaming over Games for Windows- LIVE. For a limited time, we’re offering free on the internet multiplayer on Xbox 360/ Games for Windows titles that offer LIVE cross platform play. This promotion won’t last, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they have the ability to.” You heard the man, go take advantage of it!]

The Electronic Arts website for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has been updated, and the release date has changed from September 23 to the less precise “September 2008.” If you were planning to take off work and level grind all day, you might want to reconsider until a more concrete date arrives. Given the MMO’s penchant for delays, we don’t expect September to be set in stone, either.

I’m prepared to dodge stones: I’m not a large fan of Star Wars or its universe. I get it — really, I do — but I’ve never really gotten it. But if a Barbie game looked as kickass as LucasArts’ Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, I’d be just as excited about that.

Didn’t make it to San Diego Comic-Con to pick up the convention-exclusive Mirror’s Edge comic book we told you about last week? Yeah, me neither.
But thanks to our friend Spencer over at Siliconera, it’s like we were actually there, man. He braved the not-so-long lines at Electronic Arts’ booth to pick up a copy of the comic, and then used wacky new technology to scan it for all of the world to see. Thanks, Spencer!
The comic (the first in a series that will be released by DC to coincide with the game’s release) features Mirror Edge protagonist Faith jumping across rooftops and balancing on things. Hey, you can do all of the stuff in the game! Wait a minute, is this comic book a thinly veiled advertisement?
Sneaky as it might be, it’s still pretty cool, and certainly doesn’t make us any less excited for Mirror’s Edge’s Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release. Hit up Siliconera for the comic book goods.

Midway has just released a pretty nice video of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe which offers a nice demonstrative recap of some of the elements we saw at this year’s E3. Narrated by series creator Ed Boon, it’s promotional videos like these that make me wonder why we even bother to write our own previews, if publishers are just going to do it for us.
The video shows off just about everything we touched on in our hands-on preview from E3. You see some of the announced playable characters in action, including Superman, Batman, The Flash, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Sonya Blade. Boom speaks about the game’s new close-combat fighting, and the capability to interact with the environment. What you don’t see are Superman and Scorpion’s finishing moves; you’ll have to read our preview to get the scoop on that.
What you also don’t see in action is the just-announced playable character, The Joker. Midway has passed along a pretty big and impressive render of the villain, who is currently receiving quite a bit of attention thanks to The Dark Knight film, which has made a few bucks at the box office from what we comprehend.

Earlier this afternoon, Namco-Bandai made an announcement regarding the release date for their anime adapted Afro Samurai game-o-samurai-stuff. And although a samurai is no ninja, Afro Samurai will be ninja sneaking into retailers early next year. January 27th to be ninja-exact. Hopefully, by then, the game’s dismemberment technology will do Afro’s samurai moves justice.

We knew that Wolverine would make an appearance in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows since Activision released potential box art for the game. What we didn’t know, is that Wolvy will be infected by the infamous symbiote at some point in the game, creating a clawed, Venom-like monster. Joystiq blogger (and feeble podcast producer) Justin McElroy notes that this already happened once in the comics, at which point the alien goo was immediately ejected by Woverine’s mutant healing factor. We’ve some possibilities then. One, this is a special new breed of symbiote. Two, the developers at Shaba want an awesome Woverine monster and don’t care about continuity.
Whatever the answer is, we recommend you watch the (awesome) trailer after the break, in which Wolverine shows up near the end. Be sure to watch the whole video for a look at some great looking combat too.
