Last year when I went to Bethesda to get an early glimpse of Fallout 3, I doubted their “Fall 2008″ release date. Not that the game didn’t look great — hell, it looked close to completed — but history has shown some of the most anticipated games not hitting their targets.

New screenshots for Mines of Moria expansion screenshot

Turbine just released a slew of screenshots for the upcoming Lord of the Rings Online expansion, Mines of Moria. The screenshots show some of the gloomy corridors players will have to navigate through. I’m especially enjoying the vertical scale that some of these screens portray.

I got a opportunity to hear about some of the details for the expansion recently at Gen Con. In addition to staying true to Tolkien lore, Moria will feature a seamless landscape, tons of dramatic lighting, and a “very cool way to experience the Balrog.” Players will also be able to craft “Legendary Items,” which is sure to please fans that want their own Sting-like weapon. The expansion will be in its first playable form at PAX this year, so if you’re lucky enough to be in attendance feel free to check it out. In the meantime you can just simply stare at these screens below.

Adding to the Heavy update goodness, we’ve got another brilliant video from Valve. This time around, it’s “Meet the Sandvich.”

The Sandvich is the first unlockable for the Heavy included in today’s update. Each Sandvich you eat heals you by 120 health, and your supply is unlimited. However, the Heavy will be prone to attacks during the four seconds it takes to eat a Sandvich and you cannot bring along your shotgun if you opt to pack the nutritious sack lunch.

To recap this big Team Fortress 2 update (which is now live), there’s the Killing Gloves of Boxing, 35 new achievements, an unlockable gun named Natascha, the shiny new map Badwater Basin, and lastly, TF2 Arena.

It’s a shame more developers don’t dish out free, game-changing updates on a regular basis, but hey, not everyone can be Valve or Criterion Games.

EverQuest 1 and 2 getting yet another set of expansions, refuse to die so easily screenshot

Long, long ago — back before the anticlimactic experience that was Y2K — a fantasy MMORPG called EverQuest was released, and, unlike rival MMO Ultima On the internet, was in 3D (it was a semi-big deal at the time). Even though EverQuest, or “EQ” as its inhabitants lovingly called it, had nowhere near the amount of subscribers that World of Warcraft does this day, it helped to draw many gamers (myself included) into the at-the-time newfangled MMO fad, and helped set the bar for what was to be expected in the genre.

To today, it stands as the only MMORPG that I’ve played for any sizable amount of time (around twoish years) and while I might have eventually gotten burned out after numerous late-night grinding sessions, it looks like some Norrathians are still happily spamming /auctions in Greater Faydark, as Sony On the internet Entertainment has just announced the game’s fifteenth expansion. Labeled Seeds of Destruction, it will give players the ability to recruit NPC hirelings, raise the level cap to 85, and duck tape another 20 zones onto the ever expanding multiverse.

EQ’s sequel, EverQuest II, will also be getting a new expansion. The Shadow Odyssey will be the game’s fifth expansion, and promises its own bundle of 20 new zones, which contain plenty of recycled “nostalgic” dungeons from its predecessor. There will also be new creatures, hundreds of new quests, and an increase to the achievement level cap.

Seeds of Destruction is slated to come out October 21, while The Shadow Odyssey will be arriving almost a month later on November 18. Are any of you out there still playing EQ or EQ II? Have you long since moved on to greener MMO pastures?

Warhammer Online open beta date revealed screenshot

While Mythic Entertainment was kind enough to let us know that their Realm versus Realm focused MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, would finally be hitting store shelves on September 18 — along with how much it would cost to play every month — they were a bit vague about the game’s open beta, aside from mentioning that there would be one.

It would appear that they’ve finally settled on a ‘let everyone in and hope they don’t trash our product’ date, though: September 7. That’ll give players a good 12 days to run around and kill the opposing forces of Order or Destruction before the game launches.

As for getting into the open beta, there are currently two different ways: if you were in the closed beta, then you’ll automatically be admitted to the open one, or, you could just pre-order the game from any one of these retailers and use the code that they’ll provide.

Is the open beta enough motivation for you to pre-order Warhammer?

Every time I passed by BattleForge’s booth, I just kept on walking. No one was actively playing it whenever I was near, so I just didn’t care. After watching this trailer though, I’m a tiny disappointed in myself for missing out on something so awesome looking.

Legendary producer John Garcia-Sheldon is back this week, this time crawling out of a hole in a dingy restroom to talk about some of the game’s bigger creatures. He’s joined by lead designer Stephen Skelton who, much like Garcia-Sheldon, has no hair. This leads me to believe that most of the Spark Unlimited design team behind Legendary has their heads shaved. Then animation director Kevin Scharff shows up and throws my theory to the fire; dude has a nice, full head of hair.

Consistency of hair cuts aside, the big “titan class” creatures of Legendary do look pretty slick. Take the golem, for instance, as tall as a city building and made up of concrete and tractor trailers. The in-game footage in the video looks pretty great, too, and should (in theory) make for a pretty great boss first-person shooter boss battle. But as Garcia-Sheldon points out, “it’s not just a creature fest. It’s a disaster movie.”

Personally, I’m excited for Legendary, but I have the ability to comprehend some hesitation; Spark Unlimited are the same studio who developed Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. It should be noted that the Legendary team is not the same one that worked on the ill-fated alternate-history FPS. Has that eased your mind any?

In case you missed it, check out the first and second behind-the-scenes of Legendary videos. Next week, anticipate the fourth and final video to drop; they’re not consistent with the hair cuts, but these Spark guys sure know how to deliver some videos.
