I know that plenty of Final Fantasy XI players out there are not so patiently awaiting Final Fantasy XIV for a chance to sink their teeth into a new MMO in the FF universie, but while you’re chomping at the bit why not play a bit more of XI. There will be plenty of new stuff thanks to Square Enix announcing three new battle area add-on scenarios for the game today.
The add-ons will release throughout 2010 with the first, “Vision of Abyssea,” coming sometime this summer. The next two do …

Well, that didn’t take long. Already analysts are crawling out of the woodwork to put the seemingly miraculous Bloom Box fuel cell in its place as yet another energy saving technology that won’t perform as advertised.
This week it was IDC Energy Insights analyst Sam Jaffe, who said that while the fuel cell developed by Bloom Energy CEO K.R Sridhar and his team was definitely “not bogus,” it just doesn’t differentiate itself well enough from already available fuel cell technologies—especially as it pertains to price.
And the device’s supposedly unique “fuel-switching” ability? …

What if Heavy Rain, which is so often heralded by creator David Cage as “interactive fiction,” was just a bit less interactive? Is the game’s story and cast of vaguely-French-sounding characters strong enough to carry a feature-length film? We might just find out, some day — internet super-sleuth superannuation recently uncovered copyright documents which reveal that New Line Productions optioned the rights to turn Heavy Rain into a movie on May 15, 2006 — just a few days after “The Casting” trailer (NSFW) was revealed at E3.
This doesn’t ensure the …

Fujitsu’s LifeBook UH900 started shipping to Americans just over a fortnight ago, and now one has landed into the capable hands of Pocketables. Boasting a 2GHz Atom CPU and some of the most unsightly adapters we’ve ever seen, this flip-open handheld — which just looks too lovely to be saddled with the “UMPC” moniker — strangely stirs something within our heart. It’s one of those “I know I don’t need it, but I just have to have it” things. Don’t agree? Hit the source link, scroll all the way down, …

Solar cells are cute and all, but let’s be real — these things are far too inefficient for mainstream use. Scientists at the California Institute of Technology are working hard to remedy that very issue, and they’ve recently concocted a “new type of flexible solar cell that enhances the absorption of sunlight and efficiently converts its photons into electrons.” The solution relies on arrays of long, thin silicon wires embedded onto a polymer substrate, which uses just a fraction of the expensive semiconductor materials required by conventional solar cells. According …

Looks like David Cage’s wet dream of working in movies may finally have come true. New Line Cinema has optioned Heavy Rain for film, meaning that we may very well get a movie version of a glorified movie in the very near future. Cage might no longer have to use the videogame industry as a stand-in for his movie fantasies anymore, at any rate.
Considering the gameplay is what made Heavy Rain good, and not its rather dire story, I really fail to see how this could be any good, apart …

What better way to start your Saturday afternoon than with another Nexus One release rumor. Without further ado, today we’ve got whispers care of Neowin that the recently-FCC’d CDMA device is launching on Verizon’s network March 23rd, perfect timing for the beginning of CTIA. And while that fits pretty neatly into that initial “Spring 2010″ launch window, there’s really no way for us to corroborate at this point other than just taking their word for it. You can wait diligently, can’t ya?
Nexus One coming to Verizon March 23rd? originally appeared …

Well, here’s a bit of a twist on the ever popular DIY Twitter gadget. Rather than controlling a device via Twitter, or having a device simply display or read tweets aloud, the folks behind this LED-stuffed table have taken a slightly more artistic approach by relying on the tweeting masses to generate patterns of light on the table. That’s done with a combination of a hashtag and a specific format for entering colors and coordinates, which head first for a MacBook Pro before being transmitted to the table via Bluetooth. …

Apparently, everyone in the industry thought it would be hilarious to release a trailer for their game today. It ain’t easy getting your Friday on when you have to sit through that Bad Company 2 GameStop ad a good thirty times in one day. Someone … anyone, please make the dancing soldiers stop!
In what will hopefully be the last video for tonight, we get our first in-game glimpse of Transformers: War for Cybertron. As crazy as this might sound, we’re ending things on a high note with this one. If …

Don’t count on your navigation unit seeing a sudden improvement anytime soon, but Raytheon has announced that it’s landed an massive $886 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop a new element of GPS called the advanced control segment (or OCX, somehow). Once complete, that promises to not only provide a range of ehancements for military GPS use (including anti-jam capabilities and improved security), but improved accuracy and reliability for civil GPS users as well. Details are otherwise a bit light, and this contract only represents the first …
