We spend hours making these things every year (Jack-o-lanterns, not hardware sales posts), but do you know why we make them, or why they’re called Jack-o-lanterns in the first place? Gather ’round, children:

Remember the Acer W4? After seeing it at IFA 2011, it seems that it’s finally ready to make some first impressions, and its blind date is with France. Known officially as the Allegro, Acer’s inaugural Windows Phone isn’t going over the top in the spec department: it has a 3.6-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 1GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU, 8GB internal storage, 5MP rear camera with LED flash and a 1,300mAh battery. However, a unique addition to this €299 ($425) device is a feature called Fast Charge, which allows …

Halloween is almost upon us, which means it’s time for a litany of inane “top things” list articles with vaguely spooky themes!
When it comes to stereotypical Halloween items, scarecrows are among my favorite. I’m not sure why that is, but I’ve always enjoyed stories involving haunted scarecrows and I find something aesthetically pleasant about them, albeit in an eerie way. I don’t want to have sex with them or anything, I just think they’re cool.
Naturally, Halloween causes me to become preoccupied with scarecrows of all types, so I am compelled …

Running With Scissors’ long-awaited murder-em-up Postal 3 has finally been given a real release date after all these years. You’ll be able to chew people up with badger-based weaponry on December 10.
Set in the town of Catharsis, Postal Dude will be up to his old antisocial shenanigans as he deals with a “satirically broken US economy.” He’ll be joined by “celebrity” guests including Ron Jeremy, Jennifer Walcott and Uwe Boll.
So far, the game only has a PC date, although the studio says it still aims to get an Xbox 360/PS3 …

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.

The most frustrating products are the ones that have such simple ideas, you’re upset that it hasn’t been done before — or that you weren’t the one that came up with it. No idea is so simple as the brilliant Ray solar charger. A mobile phone juicer that comes with a kickstand and …

Much of Nintendo’s success in the DS/Wii era came from games in unusual, previously unpopular, or brand new genres — like, say, the daily math minigame genre invented for Brain Age. During an investor presentation, president Satoru Iwata said that Nintendo is wisely working on inventing some new kinds of games to get the wide appeal that Brain Age and Wii Fit achieved, planning to release some games in new genres over the next fiscal year.
Iwata noted that it is more difficult now to invent surprising new styles of game …

I have been playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim all day today, but had to briefly tear myself away from all the mammoths and flamethrower-hands to unbox the Collector’s Edition, which arrived just soon after my review copy did.
Retailing for a princely $149.99, the Skyrim Collector’s Edition contains a copy of the game, an incredibly fancy art book, and a statue of a dragon. It’s a definite must-have for hardcore fans of the series, although good luck getting it home on the bus — the box is huge!
Anyway, this is …
