This is an extremely hard post to complete. Not because the Los Angeles Gears of War 2 launch celebration sucked (it didn’t), not because we didn’t get enough photos (took plenty), and not because we didn’t get good interviews (CliffyB Cliff Bleszkinski and John DiMaggio, the voice of Marcus Fenix AND Bender, and others … coming to you very soon). No, it’s because we got the game, came home and slid it into the 360, and thought, “Hey, it’ll be fun to try this Horde mode out!” Now it’s 9:15 am, and it feels like one of those days where you wake up and realize you have a chemistry test in two hours that you didn’t study for at all.

Blizzard has created a new weapon for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King that temporarily transforms you into into Bergrisst, the rhythm guitarist of cross-medium metal group Level 80 Elite Chief Tauren, complete with a shred-tacular guitar solo. The axe, dubbed the Arcanite Ripper (based on the Arcanite Reaper), is dropped by Tenris Mirkblood in Karazhan.

We’ve embedded video of the Ripper, courtesy of WoW Insider, after the break. Here’s hoping the rest of the band makes an enchanted item cameo. Wrath of the Lich King will ruin your holiday plans November 13.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

We were going to make this week’s theme related to the recent LittleBigControversy, but in trying to create a video we realized that we lack a good logo or any sense of branding for this feature (all part of being in beta, we suppose). We’re hoping there’s at least one or two readers out there adept at vector art, color theory and/or typography so let’s see what you can do. Please, internet, design the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup a logo. (Image Source)

Here are our picks for the week’s ideal game-related webcomic. Polling after the break; be sure to vote for your favorite!

Avoiding Controversy (Alt.) (2P Start)
A Broken Clock (Penny Arcade)
It Has Happened (Digital Unrest)
Both Ways (CAD Mini)
Each Single Day (Cross Platform)
Little Big Terrorist (Game Marks)
Lies (Angry Stick)
All Will Perish (Castle Vidcons)
First you must … (Indoor Heroes)
Light in a Dark World (Extra Life)

Namco Bandai has issued a statement saying that, come Jan. 31, the servers for Flagship Studios’ stillborn on the internet RPG, Hellgate: London, will, like its developer, disappear forever. In effect, Namco will be closing the gate door on one of the more disappointing launches in role-playing history.

In what the company calls a “gesture of support,” those wishing to continue playing the game on the internet until the lights come on and the bouncers shoo them out on Feb. 1 will be able to do so on the house.

Namco closing Hellgate on Jan. 31 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Oct 2008 17:14:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

When your MMO isn’t called World of Warcraft, you typically have an uphill battle to grab attention. Korean-based developer NDOORS has enacted a rather interesting marketing ploy for its free-to-play game, Atlantica On the internet. If you started playing after October 11 and reach level 50 (without going over) before November 30, you can turn in your character and receive $20 via PayPal. Sounds like a good deal until you figure that likely averages out to less than $1 per hour.

We’re not sure what’s going to cease players who like the game from redeeming $20 and creating a new login ID. If anything, with Wrath of the Lich King less than three weeks away, we anticipate a few WoW junkies making a temporary shift to help pay for their next fix.

GameTap brings the goods this week with the addition of Supreme Commander and its expansion Forged Alliance. There’s also an extra evil treat for the freeloaders out there.

This week temporarily adds Overlord to GameTap’s free-to-play titles for one week. Give it a spin, there’s definitely a “love it or hate it” division about the title. The service also adds Penumbra Overture for the foreseeable future to the gratis list, which can be found after the break.

As if sensing our growing impatience, its size almost eclipsing that of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix’s elaborate title, Capcom has sent out an e-mail assuring — nay, promising — that the graphically remade brawler would arrive on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network “very soon.”

And when is that, exactly? Well, perhaps it’ll be out by the time you’ve completed perusing the twenty new screenshots, featuring Cammy, Zangief and Blanka landing high-definition blows, below.
