Recently Sega invited me over to its San Francisco offices to take a peek at the latest game in the Total War series: Shogun 2.
As a return to the original Total War game Shogun: Total War, Shogun 2 is the latest in the real time/turn-based fusion strategy game. Sega and developer The Creative Assembly were kind enough to show me the real time battle elements of the game, with the turn-based overworld stuff saved for something I have planned next week. Fans of the franchise will certainly want to pay …

Blizzard has already boasted that StarCraft II was the fastest selling strategy game of forever. So it’s not surprising to see find that it continues to sell at an alarming pace, having broken the 3 million mark in one-month.
“We appreciate all the enthusiasm that players around the world have shown for StarCraft II,” said Blizzard CEO and cofounder Mike Morhaime. “It was important to us to deliver an overall gameplay experience that was accessible, balanced, and fun, and it’s been gratifying to see how strongly the global community has …

The Zombie Apocalypse is the new World War II, and has been for a while now when it comes to games. But most, if not all zombie games to date have mostly focused on just killing them in droves. Few have actually thought about surviving in a world full of shambling undead. Until Dead State, that is.
Developed by DoubleBear, among whose members were once of Obsidian Entertainment and Troika Games (the Arcanum people), Dead State takes survival beyond just getting to the chopper/boat/car and concentrates on the big picture. Set …

[Update- Header image changed to this pic found on Super Meat Boy's Twitter. What could it mean?]
Well, it’s not really a wrap. The hard working men of Team Meat still have to plenty of testing to do, then there are the PC and WiiWare versions of Super Meat Boy to worry about. Still, it’s exciting to know that there is a fully playable version of Super Meat Boy out there in the world. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
To go along with the announcement, Team Meat has …

Blizzard is currently prepping patch 1.1 for StarCraft II, which it hopes to get out around mid-September.
Here’s what we can look forward to: more mod features, bug fixes, improvements to the editor and custom games, support for NVIDIA’s 3D Vision, standardized hotkey options, and more. The patch will make “the Standard (US) and Standard for Lefties (US) hotkey options available in all regions.”
And then there’s the balancing stuff, which I have to imagine will anger many a vocal StarCraft II player for reasons I cannot fully comprehend. I’d be a …

Wait, what? Prior to Left 4 Dead, Valve was working on a prototype for a “flying fairy game.” In an interview with PC Gamer, Gabe Newell and other leading men at Valve spilled the details.
“That was a useful failure to us, because it was so clearly dumb that it made us say, ‘OK, what are we actually good at that we can do instead?’”
“It was so bad,” Gabe explains, “you wanted to ask yourself: ‘How could we make a game that was this bad? And how should we make a …

In the last debate, we had one of the closest voting races I’ve ever seen. Persona 4 would take the lead by two or three votes, and then Persona 3 would strike back with a few votes of its own to tie it up. This continued about ten times until one game’s pool of fans eventually dried up. It was exciting to see them compete, and both games should be proud of their performance. Here are the results:

Persona 4 — (54 votes) — Winner!
Persona 3 / Persona 3 FES — (41 …

The first of many details surrounding StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm have come out, courtesy of MTV Multiplayer. While Wings of Liberty is still eating up much of our free time, it’s never too early to ask — especially when it comes to the design philosophy of Blizzard — what’s ahead of us.
Executive VP of game design Rob Pardo has the answers. “It’s hard to imagine doing a Zerg-based campaign the same way [as the Terran story] or, for that matter, doing a Protoss one.”
“We really want to make …

I think it is safe to say that Crytek is a crazy-insane developer. Every time they release a new game it becomes the benchmark to test your PC, even three years after its release it is hard to find middle of the road hardware that can run Crysis maxed out. Crysis 2 on the other hand is going to be released on consoles and PC. This makes it possible for many gamers out there (including myself) to play a Crytek game the way it is meant to be played.
Sten Huebler, lead designer …

A couple of weeks ago, Klei Entertainment offered up the complete soundtrack for their upcoming game Shank provided they could get 1,500 people to like their Facebook page. While the goal was almost instantly met, the reward is still incoming. Six of the soundtrack’s thirteen songs have been posted to Klei’s website with a promise that the rest will trickle out in the coming days.
To accompany the music, Klei revealed that Shank will have unlockable costumes such as the two pictured above. The one in the yellow jumpsuit is appropriately named …
