Nominations for the Independent Games Festival Awards 2009 have been announced today and one of our favorite PSN titles, PixelJunk Eden, has been nominated for three categories. The categories are: Excellence in Visual Art, Excellence in Audio and Technical Excellence. Eden is one of few console games to be nominated in this year’s awards, and the only PlayStation Network title to get recognition.
The winners will be revealed at the Independent Games Festival which takes place in San Francisco between March 23rd and 27th. If you want to learn …

It looks like Cuboid, one of three upcoming PSN games from Creat Studios, will be released soon. A post on the PlayStation Blog by Creat Producer Olga Sokolova shows a little more of what we can expect from the game. Cuboid will sell for $9.99 when it releases “soon” and will include 66 levels (that’s just over 15 cents a level). Creat promises that there will also be post-launch premium packs including new levels as well as a level editor. …

It looks like that Yakuza 3 bundle isn’t the only SKU out on the market with an extra dash of special detail. A bundle for Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 will also feature a unique 80GB PS3 adorned with a Tri-Cell logo. It’s perhaps not as stylish as the Yakuza 3 one, but at least it comes with a second controller. The set hits Japan on March 5 alongside the debut of RE5 and will retail for ¥48,980 ($522).
It’s interesting to see Sony pursue an interest in this …

We just had a chance to get our hands all over Logitech’s G-series peripherals, including the G19 keyboard, G9x mouse and G13 gameboard. The G19 keyboard feels very responsive if not a bit hefty, but the real catch here is the 320 x 240 LCD. You can navigate through YouTube using adjacent keys, and the Britney Spears video we ended up watching was particularly crisp. The rep told us it’d be able to play anything compatible with Windows Media. The G9x mouse is what you come to expect from earlier …

I have almost no apps in my iPhone, only the most useful ones for NYC. But iSteam, a steam simulator, looks like a fun one to install and keep.
As you can see in the video, the application adds ultra-realistic steam to your screen when you blow on the microphone.
After that you can use your fingers to clean it, causing squeaky sounds, condensation, and drops that get affected by the orientation of the phone, like it would happen in real life. But without frying your iPhone. It’s silly. It’s useless. It …

This year we’ve seen the PS3’s Cell processor pitch in and help break the petaflop barrier, exploit a major security hole in SSL encryption and enable adolescent hijinks on PlayStation Home. Obviously, this is one serious piece of kit. According to The Race For A New Game Machine, written by two of the folks responsible for designing the thing, the Cell (a partnership between Toshiba, Sony and IBM) was the product of a deal that opened the door to IBM selling key parts of the chip to Microsoft before they …

PlayStation Home will be host to a few virtual meetings operated by Ernst & Young to reduce carbon emissions. The hope is that a suitable online world will help eliminating the daily need to commute and meet in real-world offices. The project is being led by Dr. Nipan Maniar and Manish Malik from Portsmouth University and includes other participants, like Microsoft and Merill Lynch.
“Audio and video-conferencing solutions have emerged but the use of virtual worlds may offer the next evolution in overcoming the tyranny of distance - a …

Not only did the Den of Geek assemble a respectable (if not a little controversial) list of the top 50 special effects shots of cinema, the site also explained the tricks behind the illusions.
Of course the well-deserving staples show up in the list (Star Wars, Tron and Jurassic Park), but there was one in particular that I didn’t know about, and it may be the most convincing moment on the list.
In Total Recall, there’s a brief moment where a secretary changes the colors of her nails with the tap of …

While everyone else is getting drunk, doing all kinds of exotic drugs and making out, you could ring in the new year with a breath-powered virtual new year’s horn for your iPhone. But don’t.
I’m all for iPhone apps replacing real-word objects and tools that I would then no longer have to purchase, carry or dispose of. But festive New Years Eve blowers is where i draw the line. The countdown sure is handy though, if you can’t operate a digital clock. [NYE Countdown - iTunes via Cult of Mac]
