GoW2: Linked achievements unlock in-game content

Big Gears of War 2 news coming out of San Diego’s Comic-Con. Gears 2 is going to utilize linked accomplishments! Huzzah! Oh, you don’t know what link achievements are? Quite understandable. Utilizing linked accomplishments means a game recognizes previously earned achievements from another game and unlocks new content based on their unlocked status. In Gears of War 2’s case, it’ll be looking at which Gears of War accomplishments you’ve already unlocked and, in turn, unlock Gears 2 goodies. Which Gears achievements will unlock what content in Gears 2? Not all are known quite yet, but thus far we’re aware that:

Unlocking the “Completed Act 1″ achievement in GoW unlocks Anthony Carmine in GoW2 multiplayer.
Unlocking the “A Dish Ideal Served Cold” achievement in GoW unlocks General RAAM in GoW2 multiplayer.
Unlocking the “Time to Remember” achievement in GoW unlocks Minh Young Kim in GoW2 multiplayer.

We just can’t wait to see what our “Seriously …” accomplishment efforts unlock in Gears of War 2. Maybe an instant-win mode? That’d be sweet.

Halo Wars panel hints at the inclusion of the Flood

During the long, extensive and detailed Q&A session at the Comic-Con Halo Wars panel, details about a certain Floody race were awkwardly hinted at. After asked whether or not the Flood would be included in Halo Wars, the entire panel (made up of all sorts of Halo developers, writers and figure creators) went silent, looked uncomfortable and finally gave the pseudo answer “it is a complete Halo game.” Confirmation that the Flood will appear in Halo Wars? No, not at all. Confirmation that mention of the Flood being included in Halo Wars makes the dev team feel uneasy? Definitely!

Rumor: Vader DLC to darken SoulCalibur IV

Once thought to be the only good, pure and white edition of SoulCalibur IV may eventually be tainted with DLC from the dark side. Rumor on the internets is that NAMCO’s Xbox 360 edition of SoulCalibur IV, which exclusively includes Yoda and a white color scheme, may eventually get the PS3 exclusive Darth Vader fighter as a content download. Proof is in the in-game video pudding and, as you can see above, we’ve proof that both Yoda AND Darth Vader can battle it out in on the same Xbox 360. If true, are you willing to pay for a DLC Darth Vadar or do you demand your Vadar to be free content?

Reminder: Gamestop’s Gears of War 2 event tonight

Just in case you somehow forgot, even then we told you to mark it on your calendar and circle it twice, there’s a Gears of War 2 After Hours event going on tonight at 9:30PM held at Gamestop stores nationwide. True, we’ve already been given the distinct honor of viewing the exclusive video clip prior to its official airing tonight, but there is also some Gears of War tournament goodness going down too. You could win a t-shirt or some Microsoft points and maybe even mingle with some fellow Gearheads. It’ll be fun, we plomise. Heck, we’ll even commit to attending an After Hours event in central Minnesota. We’re cool enough to attend … are you?

New Afro Samurai trailer kicks ass, drops names

There’s a new trailer out for the Namco brawler Afro Samurai and, to be honest, it looks pretty hot. The trailer introduces gamers to many of the series’ main characters, all of whom will apparently be voiced by the original voice actors for the TV show, which means we’ll be treated to the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Perlman. The gameplay shown in the video certainly looks intriguing, featuring some very cool looking maneuvers, but it remains unclear exactly how much control the player will have over everything. At any rate, Afro Samurai has piqued our interest.

Wheelman wheels its way to a Q1 2009 release

In other game delay news, Midway just announced that Wheelman, a game based on the Vin Diesel motion picture by the same name, will not make its originally planned Fall release and will instead be pushed back into the first quarter of 2009. Still plenty of time for the 2009 release of the flick and still plenty of time to make the game fun and enjoyable. Oh yeah, we went there …

Raven Squad to include online co-op, nothing else

After getting a chance to touch Southpeak’s FPS gone RTS gone FPSRTS Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger during E3 (that title, wowzaz), we were informed that the game would have completely no Xbox Live support whatsoever. A metaphorical death kiss to any new franchise trying to make a name for itself. But now we know that the information was incorrect. We just confirmed with Southpeak that Raven Squad will in fact have Xbox Live co-op support, but no other multiplayer modes beyond that. So, that means no co-op locally and no versus locally or over Xbox Live. Just co-op FPSRTS gaming over Live which, admittedly, is superior than no support at all. Right?

Gears of War movie gets more financing

Variety reports that Legendary Photos has signed on to co-finance and co-produce the upcoming Gears of War film adaptation. This comes in the wake of Legendary financing another film based on a tiny game called World of Warcraft. Legendary also recently had its hand in The Dark Knight, which is currently tearing up the box office. Epic guru Mark Rein said of the deal, “Legendary’s appetite for the synthesis of gaming, film and pop culture meshes perfectly with our own.” Well, that’s good. We all like it when appetites for synthesis mesh.
