When I first heard of the production of this game, I thought it would be another mirror’s edge type of game. The talk at the time and some previews I had read made me feel like there wasn’t much to expect of the game other than a game that is supposed to capture the hearts of all the previous Chronicle of Riddick fans. My opinion changed of the game once I had a chance to view some exclusive preview videos of the game. Some of which I did post on Techchill a while back.

Of course now my expectations of the game were that it was going to be more than just a mirror’s edge type of game and frankly it was a lot more.
So I got the game about 2 days ago, and started playing just to test it out. The visual display of the game and the effects make it so damn realistic, that I actually got kind of surprised. Compared to the first game released in 2004 this game had made so many strides and they were obvious to me within the first 15 minutes of playing the game. The speech and character development in the game is also a huge plus point in this game. It really enhanced the gameplay and some other reviewers have gone as far to say that it might have the best voice acting that we’ll see this year. I did actually play Butcher’s Bay before a few times, and while this game doesn’t really seem like a continuation, it seems more like a remake. I did see a few connections between the original plot and this plot but I might be missing something. Of course that doesn’t take away from the gameplay or the plot of Assault on Dark Athena.

The plot of Dark Athena starts off as Riddick being captive in space on a ship, and a man named Johns who was originally one of the people who took Riddick to prison in the first game helps him from being captured, and instead gets captured himself. That’s basically the main plot. Throughout the plot Riddick is a person who can see in the dark and one who lurks in the dark for most of the time so that the guards cannot spot him. These guards are mercenaries who have the bodies of humans but also have some artificially intelligence in them. Riddick either contacts guards head on or sneaks up on guards and kills them. As Riddick tries to escape from the ship he meets many other passengers along the way who are being held captive, each with their own offerings to Riddick and some who ask him to find stuff or do stuff for him. From the get go to the fighting the final character this game has most of everything. I personally would recommend going through the tutorial mode first before actually playing the game, because I tried skipping it the first time and there was somewhat of a long learning curve. That might just be because I am used to playing a lot of other games and with different controls it makes it somewhat confusing for me. As a note I would like to add that there is a lot of first person action and somewhat of a lot of violence in the game which is why it is rated Mature.
After playing the actual campaign type of mode of the game for a while, I decided to go online and play the ever hyped Pitch Black mode. So how was it? Well it was probably the most entertaining multiplayer I’ve played in a while. Basically how it works is that one player of the online players in the game becomes Riddick, and the rest of the players are the mercenaries who are hunting him. I actually had the chance to be Riddick and it was very enjoyable because as Riddick I could see everyone else and where they were going but they had no clue where I was. The most satisfying is sneaking up on them and killing them. The rest of the multiplayer games are still good but not up to par with the Pitch Black mode. Basically the Pitch Black mode to Chronicles of Riddick was like Zombie Mode to Call of Duty 5. A huge majority of the people liked it, because of the pure teamwork involved but others didn’t and that’s completely up to their preferences.
So overall would I recommend this game to you?
Yes I would recommend this game review to you because the plot itself is sure to keep you intact with hours if not days of fun. This includes the combat in the game which is mostly hand to hand in the beginning but then includes the use of guns later on. Another reason why I would recommend it is cause of the actual storyline, speech and graphics.
This game really is something for people who like first-person action games and is great just for others who enjoyed Tom Clancy type of releases in the past. Atari has really outdone themselves in this game and as a final Techchill review score I will reward it about A 8.5/10. Thanks for reading my review and post any questions you have about the game in the comments section and I will try my best to answer them. If you haven’t already, download the demos on each respective system and see if the game is for you or not.

So after having a go at the demo you’ll have your choice whether to buy it or not. I personally have already tried the demo for the Xbox 360 and it has a certain Tom Clancy/Mirror’s Edge kind of feel. Definetly something interesting. So yeah definetly try out the demo on the Xbox 360 or PS3 if you haven’t already.
